Where we can focus
How about no?
As in, no, no, no, no, NO.
In an interview with BBC News to promote his new book Saving Justice, former FBI Director James Comey said President-elect Joe Biden should “consider” pardoning his predecessor Donald Trump when he takes office on Jan. 20th.
No, he really shouldn’t. Not for a second.
Asked if Biden should take a page from Gerald Ford, who pardoned Richard Nixon in 1974, Comey replied, “I don’t know. He should consider it.” While he said he’s not sure Trump—who has reportedly floated the idea of pardoning himself—would accept such a pardon, he added, “As part of healing the country and getting us to a place where we can focus on things that are going to matter over the next four years, I think Joe Biden is going to have to at least think about that.”
Ford should not have pardoned Nixon, and Biden absolutely should not pardon the rat from Queens.
I frankly can’t imagine why Comey thinks otherwise.
Comey thinks otherwise because he is a fatuous jerk. He likes to pretend that he’s a clear-minded, serene agent of order, but he still hasn’t accepted that his breach of FBI protocol helped throw the election to Trump. He wants to believe that he is an important actor on the political stage, but instead he is a tool with delusions of grandeur.
he’s remarkably out of touch if he thinks pardoning trump would foster some kind of healing. At this point having the justice department demonstrate that it is a functioning entity would go farther even if it pisses off all the right wing nut jobs and assholes.
Why does the idea that Biden should follow Ford’s example come from? Even if one could make a case that Trump’s crimes are no worse than Nixon’s were – and that would take some industrial-strength denial – there is one very major difference that seems to be overlooked every time the idea is mentioned; Ford was Nixon’s V.P., while Biden isn’t even part of the same political party as Trump. I’m guessing that large part of Ford’s motive was loyalty, either to Nixon or to the party, but what loyalty does Biden owe either Trump or the Republican party?
*Where* does….
I can’t imagine anything that would rile Biden’s voters than pardoning Trump.
Trump wouldn’t accept a pardon from Biden? Oh, please. Trump will accept anything that gets his fat ass out of trouble. I suspect he’d accept it even if it came from Barack Obama…or Nancy Pelosi.
Why do we have this idea that somehow the best thing for the nation is to forget the crimes of the wealthy corrupt people who “serve” as President? That’s one reason we keep getting corruption…no one stops it. Other countries have been known to jail corrupt politicians, but we just want to do the slap on the hand thing. I’m sure Comey is right there with Susan Collins, though, sure that he’s learned his lesson.
