When/if
National Equalities Convener for the SNP here.
Now don’t you dare say she’s claiming gender critical protesters are fascists. Not at all!! She’s saying fascists might show up to stand with anti-trans protesters. Completely different! Not at all meant to mislead people into thinking feminist women are anti-trans fascists!
“Ethnonationalist”? From an official of the SNP? Does she recall what the N stands for? And the S?
The core point though is that protesting some of the goals of the misogynist wing of trans activism is not “anti-trans.” Gender critical feminists don’t want to oppress or punish trans people, we want to protect women’s rights, including our right to talk about our rights without being told to be inclusive of men. That’s it. Trans people can flourish without telling women to shut up about women or include men as women. Fascism is nowhere on the map.
I find it confusing, as apparently did some of the responders to the original tweet.
On the one hand, I would be glad for differentiation between two groups of people who might nominally be opposed to gender self-ID. There is a lot of guilt-by-association. But maybe this attempt at distinguishing really is intended to confuse. I have no idea who she is referring to by “fascists”.
It is unfortunate that “gender critical” gets used to refer to any position that disagrees with some aspect of trans dogma. The Catholic Church is not gender critical, for instance. And actual gender-critical people get called fascist or Nazi. It’s all The Others, we don’t need to differentiate among them.
She may not be explicitly calling gender critical protesters fascists, but she sure isn’t disabusing people of that notion. She is deliberately blurring the lines between the two by suggesting that the GC group may harbour fascists, with no real suggestion that the two are distinguishable from one another. And that’s after the initial denigration of the entire group as anti-trans.
Sackbut, it strikes me as an intellectual laziness very similar to that exhibited by the far right / Trump crowd. Everything they don’t like is socialist, communist, fascist, nazi, stasi, treason…
She’s not so much equating the two groups as strongly insinuating that their motivations and rationales are the same. Both fascists and gender critical feminists are authoritarian, controlling, and demonize other groups because they can’t tolerate differences and individual freedom. The gender critical think and act like fascists.
And she and other TAs probably believe this because most of them couldn’t describe the GC position accurately if they tried. Because when they try, they usually get it horribly wrong — the opposite, sometimes.
Sastra, it’s not really surprising that they cannot describe the gender critical position accurately; they can’t describe their own position coherently.
That description of “fascists” seems to fit the gender goblins like a glove.
tigger for the win. It’s incoherence and contradiction all the way down. LIke something out of Kabbalah!
@tigger_the_wing:
Ok, you made me laugh out loud.
Which “white supremacist, ethnonationalist organization” is she talking about?
Take your pick. It doesn’t even have to be real, just as long as it is white supremacist, fascist, and anti-trans. Maybe the Order of the White Supremacist Gender Critical Feminists for Hitler?
She’s talking here about “Patriotic Alternative Scotland”, which is originator of the poster she linked to after getting called out on her earlier shitpost. It is legitimately a fascist group, and a pretty vile one at that, actively recruiting kids as young as 12 to their ’cause’.
Which leaves me frustrated. Because this was an actual missed opportunity for Fiona to actually reach across the lines, here. It’s a safe bet that any GCF would be as appalled as any TRA about a bunch of fascist hooligans showing up to display their ignorance. Forwarding that poster directly to the groups organizing the protest, with the heads-up, “Hey, we know these people aren’t you, or what you stand for; keep an eye out for them at the rally, and make sure they can’t use it for their own propaganda,” would’ve been a way to both limit the fascist impact AND create at least a momentary bit of solidarity that could lead to a proper dialogue.
Instead, she focused all her attention towards her own in-group, and was shocked when folks who weren’t aware of PAS (and thus, knew nothing about their intentions) were confused. Narcissism is why we can’t have nice things, I guess.
For folks who are interested: The Source of All Knowledge’s page on the PA (of which PAS is a part.
Yes, her first tweet tells the counter-protesters, i.e. the trans activists, to keep safe, while not telling the protesters to do so, which is a pretty clear signal that she considers the protesters Bad People Who Deserve Whatever They Get.
