Ari Berman (author of the voting rights classic Give Us the Ballot) on the horrific ruling:
Breaking: Supreme Court upholds GOP voting restrictions in Arizona, further weakening Voting Rights Act & giving green-light to GOP voter suppression laws. 6-3 opinion by Alito. Kagan dissents https://t.co/YTt9hzew3n — Ari Berman (@AriBerman) July 1, 2021

In 2013 SCOTUS gutted Voting Rights Act. Since then 26 states have enacted new voter suppression laws Now conservative majority shredding what remains of VRA, giving green-light to greatest rollback of voting rights since end of Reconstruction https://t.co/snNh4mrEpy — Ari Berman (@AriBerman) July 1, 2021

SCOTUS decision gutting what’s left of VRA shows how desperately For the People Act & John Lewis Voting Rights Act needed. Just like with VRA in 1965, only Congressional action can stop onslaught of voter suppression. And expand the court so it doesn't strike down new laws — Ari Berman (@AriBerman) July 1, 2021

In 2013 when he gutted Section 5 of Voting Rights Act John Roberts wrote “our decision in no way affects the permanent, nationwide ban on racial discrimination in voting found in Section 2” Now SCOTUS conservatives gutting Section 2. Their goal all along was to kill entire VRA pic.twitter.com/dwmty8iG76 — Ari Berman (@AriBerman) July 1, 2021

The overall goal, of course, being permanent Republican control of all three branches of government.
Of course, but also the disenfranchisement of the underclass.
So the GOP is effectively returning the U.S. to the colonialist roots that supposedly inspired the American Revolution?
That’s invariably the problem with revolution, it revolves.
OB #2: Yeah. The old kill two birds with one stone. It’s a win/win for them, a fuck off for everyone else.
Depending on the voting coalitions I’m not really sure how this’ll shake out. A significant portion of Trump’s voter base could be significantly affected by these sorts of laws whereas it’s less clear what the interests of suburbanites will be.
