I wrote a column for The Freethinker about stupidity that’s not genuine involuntary stupidity but chosen stupidity, deliberate stupidity, stupidity in aid of ideology or tribe or hatred. That’s what much of the anti-vax bullshit is: not really about the vax and not really a mistake, but just a kind of point-scoring.
It’s incredibly cut off your nose to spite your face, but it seems millions of people find it entirely worth it for the sake of irritating the libbruls.
Some of them stop finding it worth it once they’re gasping for breath though.
“Trust in God not vaccines.”
That is a great rallying call. Trust God (who created everything, including Covid-19 for whatever reason). He got the world into this mess, so God can bloody-well get us out of it. Just give God time. Don’t whatever you do try to hurry God up. God could get really annoyed and decide to teach us ALL a nasty lesson that none of us will forget too quickly.
That slogan will likely flush every God-fearing whack job out of the woodwork pretty quick-smart. Then they can all be rounded up and isolated somewhere so they do minimal harm and don’t infect others. I’m thinking the vast salt lakes of Utah or Arizona.
And as well, there’s the God-given whack job bonus:
Interesting times.
Here in Australia we have a federal government led by one such Bible-bashing whack job, who would be a laugh if the situation was not so serious. But Katharine Murphy has got him worked out; at https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/aug/03/politics-rides-roughshod-over-substance-as-scott-morrison-tries-to-spin-his-way-out-of-covid-corner

I’ve often thought that as a species we can no longer afford to deprive huge swathes of humanity of the right to education, employment, safety – life itself even – because of sex, race, poverty, etc. It’s a luxury belief to think that some people don’t matter, and that we don’t need all hands on deck as we sail into disaster. We need all the brainpower and thinking and ideas we can to get us out of the mess we’re in. The ideas we need could come from anyone, anywhere. Narrow, short-sighted concepts of “competition” or “getting ahead” are very likely holding us back from finding solutions to the perfect storm of climate change, loss of biodiversity, habitat loss, resource depletion, water scarcity, and population pressure we are currently witnessing. Too many people occupying critical choke points in cultures and societies around the world are too stupid to see this, and are more interested in parochial one-upmanship than facing the larger issues of global survival.
And it turns out that breathing is so much easier with a functioning nose still attached. Who knew?
I’ll put my trust in people who can correctly punctuate signs.
