Maugham’s statement that the Charity Commission supports LGB Alliance activities through taxes is blatantly false. What the LGBA’s charitable status means is that it can reclaim the tax previously paid by its donors on their donations. The money the CC receives is the donors’ money, not the Government’s, or the Charity Commission’s. The CC is the regulator, not a source of funding. It is impossible for a tax lawyer such as Maugham not to know this. So the only conclusion is that he is deliberately misleading the gullible. We must hope they feel let down when the challenge fails.
