$5k for the first infringement. $10k for each one thereafter I believe. Screechy, can political donations be used to pay fines – which are surely personal expenses?
Well, technically, the fines are being deducted from the Members’ pay. So it’s not a question of paying the fines. And I’m sure there are prohibitions on having a PAC reimburse a member for fines.
My point is just that if you asked the average Member if they would accept a $5k deduction in their paycheck (and presumably it’s less after taxes?) in exchange for having an extra $50k (or whatever, that was just my guess) in donations, most of them would take that deal. I’m sure there are all sorts of ways that campaign funds can be used legally or quasi-legally to pay expenses, and failing that there are probably some members who don’t really rely on their Congressional paychecks anyway.
I doubt any of them will take it so far as to rack up huge amounts of fines. Just do it once or twice, and then rant about it for months in your fundraising pitches about what a Brave Hero you are, standing up to that antigun dictator Nancy Pelosi and The Squad (who don’t really have anything to do with it, but never pass up a chance for the racist/misogynist/commie-baiting trifecta!).
It’s like how Boebert released a video that purported to show her walking around everywhere with her gun, but when challenged on it her staff admitted that it was staged.
Because they’re white?
I’m happy with fining these jackasses $5K every time they set off the alarms and don’t stop. Going in, OR out.
James,
Unfortunately, each $5k fine is probably worth about $50k in fundraising to them.
