Losers
Trans-identifying man Laurel Hubbard has been named New Zealand Sports Woman of the Year. Who has not been named that?
None of these women made the cut, but Laurel Hubbard did. Hubbard didn’t win anything at the Olympics, but he made the cut.
Why?
It has to be because he’s a “trans woman” i.e. a man who identifies as a woman, and because he’s the first such man to take a woman’s place at the Olympics.
Why is that something to reward? Why is it something to make Sports Woman of the Year?
I would really like to know what the thinking is.
Yeah, clearly not awarded by merit. Hubbard didn’t make a single successful lift in the Olympics and finished dead last, so a pretty embarrassing performance. Lift total of zero.
I guess “stunning and brave” goes a long way.
I know this is probably rhetorical. Was there any thinking? Or just reacting to the shouting of the Woke Youth who insist that TWAW? No thinking required for TWAW.
Also, going by the surnames, there are various ethnic minorities among the winners – Maori, Pacific Islander, Chinese. And they lose out to the loser Hubbard.
Porky’s father must be very proud. :P
Please stop erasing men. It’s not “Laurel”, it’s Gavin. We must not let men be erased by our inability to see reality.
KB, yes – I scanned for likely Maori and other names first thing. Indeed there are.
twiliter, don’t call him “Porky,” ok? Let’s not plunge to their level.
All those privileged cis women didn’t have to struggle through the horrific abuse Hubbard did.
Abuse like “You’re cheating” and “You’re taking away a woman’s spot” and “You’re exceeding the fair physical standards set aside for women” and “You’re going to eliminate women from their own competition.” I mean, really, really ugly name-calling like that. It was a raging nightmare no award can compensate for, but here it is, anyway.
OK, sorry. It’s a pet name. :)
I wouldn’t mind Notconspicuouslyinshapey, but the other one is just that little bit too direct.
It’s shameful grovelling on behalf of Otago Uni trying ever so hard to bolster woke credentials frankly. Interestingly it’s also received very little coverage in New Zealand, because the Otago Uni sports awards are meh?
Because of over a century of intermarriage in NZ, you can’t even go by obviously Māori/european/pacifica/asian names to determine heritage. Both Carrington and Woodman for example have Māori heritage.
You know who else is missed off that list? Sophie Pascoe. Sophie is a Paralympian. She’s represented NZ at four olympics, winning a total of eleven golds, seven silvers and one bronze medal. Add to that golds (4) at the Commonwealth Games, and more golds at the World Para Games. She’s always referred to as ‘our most successful disabled athlete’, which frankly grates on me because she’s one of our most successful athletes full stop. Sure, her times don’t match elite able bodied athletes, but if we’re rewarding people for overcoming adversity and discrimination to achieve greatness representing their country, she deserves consideration.
Hubbard isn’t fit to carry the flip flops for any of these athletes, let alone beat them to a best athlete award.
Yes, I’d be more inclined to wait for the Halberg Awards to be announced. Although, it is slightly concerning that their website states “Judging Criteria for the 2022 ISPS Handa Halberg Awards is to come.”. I hope that is not because they are trying to find a way to insert Gavin “Notconspicuouslyinshapey” Hubbard into the women’s categories.
It was rather in reference to his swinish behavior and not his silhouette, but that particular pet name doesn’t work without that connotation so it was a bad choice on my part. I generally try not to criticize people for accidents of birth, and I never have done much of that, but what they say or do is fair game! ;)
