In the name of the people
Carlson is the dependable voice of the dominant force on the right that will destroy democracy in the name of “the people”.
Last week, Carlson’s Fox News beamed an admiring show from Viktor Orbán’s Hungary, even though there is every indication that Orbán will make it Europe’s first rightwing dictatorship since the fall of Franco’s Spain in 1975.
Or rather because Orban is the next Franco. Fox News doesn’t have any scruples about such things.
Like the unforgivably overrated Roger Scruton, Trump’s mentor Steve Bannon, that part-time defender of free speech Jordan Peterson, and until recently the leaders of Europe’s nominally anti-dictatorial Christian Democrat parties, Carlson was comfortable with his own hypocrisy. The right he represents says it believes in freedom of speech when liberals threaten it. Yet in Hungary, freedom of the press is in its death agonies.
If Fox and Carlson really believed in a free press they wouldn’t tell so many lies. A press that mostly lies isn’t really a free press, it’s more like a tool press.
Liars can more often than not get trapped into belief in their own lies, and so dud themselves. A conscious lie will be strongly defended, out of the liar’s fear of public exposure and humiliation. A fashionable lie will be abandoned like last season’s clothing when it loses its crowd.funding. Thus the immortal Vicar of Bray:
The illustrious house of Hanover and Protestant succession / To these I do allegiance swear — while they can hold possession / .For in my faith and loyalty I never more will falter, / And George my lawful king shall be — until the times do alter.
Tucker Carlson and his ilk will be true to whatever cause they support, until it no longer suits them to do so. Even if it means that they have to go around proclaiming that 2 + 2 = 5.

Or at least that’s how it used to be back in the pre-posttruth era. As people are quick to point out, outright and subtle lies, spin, bullshit, twisting and bending of the truth, half-truths, obfuscation and all kinds of self-serving “framings” have always been with us. What seems to have changed is that there no longer seems to be any strong norm against lying nor any particular cost associated with being caught.
Lies? What lies?

Right-wing populism leads quickly to fascism. Tucker Carlson doesn’t even believe in it. It’s a grift. He’s figured out what those people want to hear.
