I don’t believe he’s doing this for ideological reasons. I don’t believe he thinks he’s doing the right thing or achieving fairness. I don’t think he’s even kidding himself that his means are justified in achieving any end. I don’t believe he has an end in mind or cares about whether one might exist.
I was suspicious of whether the site had really been taken down…. And I was right to be. This Matt character appears to have been lying and has no ability to take down the payment gateway.
The site is currently in maintenance mode (at Marion’s request) but my understanding is that it will be back and any donations made still stand.
In the meantime, of course, a number of fake Paypal accounts have sprung up, so be careful if you’re planning to donate. Check with Marion or For Women Scotland for the right link first.
There was a time (long past) when I thought that Billingham had good intentions, but that time is long past. For whatever reason, he has taken up against women’s rights, with a vengeance. He has clearly demonstrated in the recent past that he considers the rights of women & girls to be secondary to men’s rights, and that he’s quite willing to fight dirty to achieve superiority of the latter. It’s beyond just the-ends-justify-the-means; it’s a focus on the means themselves as the ends, viz. shutting down/shutting up and voices that dare to question trans ideology.
Amusingly, Billingham has children and is (or at least was, a few years ago) married. That is, he clearly understands the biological basis of sex, and has used that knowledge to his advantage by forming a family. I reckon he’s hoping that this information not become widely known, lest he become tarred as a “bio-essentialist”.
I also believed Billingham’s intentions were good, once upon a time. The blockbot, for instance; I believed it was genuinely (originally) about people being able to protect themselves from harassers.
I don’t know whether I was wrong about his motives there, but what I’m sure of is that, like many others, he has found his true calling in the gender identity extremist movement because it allows him to bully women with impunity while pretending to be virtuous. I think it’s a mistake to believe his actions serve any purpose other than that. All his dreams have come true at once.
Be wary of him. He’s dangerous, not because he has any particular skills but because he has absolutely no shame at all and is willing to put in monumental amounts of effort to achieve minute results that nobody sane would consider a win. He’s also dangerously obsessive. Best avoided.
Rob:
I’m not sure we’re talking about the most upstanding, law abiding members of society here…
I don’t know if they have such a cause of action in the UK or Scotland (to the extent it has a separate legal system), but in many states in the USA there is such a thing as tortious interference with a contract or with economic advantage. The Scots Law version of tort used to be called “delict.” I don’t know if it still is, but malicious interference in someone else’s economic relationship might be actionable.
There were various updates throughout the evening but at time of typing, Marion has left things as follows:
The crowdfunder is down, but not because Matt at GiveWP took it down (he can’t). I’m not sure what service GiveWP is claiming to have withdrawn, but that seems to have been virtue signalling or – more accurately – a lie.
In any case, the crowdfunder is down, but because Marion took it down, not because of GiveWP’s bullshit.
Marion tweeted:
Hey everyone thanks again for all your amazing support.
I am going to come off twitter for a few days as super busy at work and have a few nights away this weekend.
I will no longer be crowdfunding or seeking further donations.
Thank you so so much for everything ❤❤❤❤❤
She’s putting her house on the market instead.
I believe she’s doing this because she doesn’t want her friends and supporters to face the hassle and risk of further rounds of this horror show. I hope that she’s just feeling (understandably) dispirited and that after a few days away from Twitter we might persuade her to change her mind.
As I understand it, any donations previously made through the crowdfunding site will still go to Marion’s lawyers. I certainly haven’t had any notice that mine has been returned.
I’m expecting For Women Scotland to make a statement about this today, I’ll keep my eyes open. I’ll be keeping an eye on the situation with LGBA’s funding, too.
The people who keep doing this to Marion, Billingham included, are anti-justice. It’s anyone’s right to mount the best defence they can against charges and these people are interfering with that right. This is terrifying and it’s evil, whether they’re doing it because they genuinely (somehow) believe that the end justifies the means or because they are sadistic, narcissistic bellends like Billingham.
It’s just an utter lack of empathy, as well as foresight. These people simply cannot imagine these mores, procedures, and laws being used against them. But in a democratic and open society, that is inevitable; there is already a major backlash brewing, of which Brexit and Trump were but the merest of previews, and when the backlashers come to power, they will definitely remember these mores and procedures and laws.
I checked how my monthly donation to the LGB Alliance works. In April 2020, JustGiving and GoFundMe closed their LGB Alliance fundraising pages, so I reestablished my £100/month donation using the LGB Alliance Donations page that lets donors give directly by card or PayPal. I like that PayPal charges me no foreign transaction fee (to convert $US to £UK). So now my donation goes from me through PayPal to the LGB Alliance.
James Billingham tweeted about web pages using the GiveWP plugin, where GiveWP charges a fundraiser a yearly fee for licensing and support (e.g. Basic $199/year). Matt Cromwell at GiveWP tweeted about a Marion Millar fundraiser: “we’re donating any fees we received from her fundraising to a Trans-rights charity in the UK”. So he was talking about money that GiveWP got from a fee to a fundraiser, I’m guessing $199 total.
I feel secure now, knowing that GiveWP cannot cancel our donations, or claw back our donation money. And this incident fits what you wrote about Billingham:
He’s dangerous, not because he has any particular skills but because he has absolutely no shame at all and is willing to put in monumental amounts of effort to achieve minute results that nobody sane would consider a win.
Well, anyone who has been to a speaking enagement put on by feminists who want to discuss this issue can plainly see where the hate is, and to whom it is directed.
The banging on the windows at the Seattle Public Library in 2020 was a bit unnerving, to say the least. Most people think it is deserved, though, which is why men like Billingham get away with this.
Obsessive prick, isn’t he?

He just wants to bully women.

Poor Marion.
Is that not illegal? Isn’t it fraudulent? At the least it must be a breach of the T&C of the donation site(s).

Well that’s a relief.
And what latsot said @ 2 – that’s what I think also. Billingham is a sadist who channels all his sadism into bullying women.

This should never happen to anyone. How horrible for her. Completely undeserved.
latsot, thank you for the information.
