Hey did you know Jolyon Maugham had been on a humbling journey away from know-it-all-ism? Because I sure didn’t know that. I have to say I think he must have gotten off at the wrong stop.
Somehow his humbling journey didn’t involve having any of his beliefs overturned. So it amounted to, “That thing you already believe? Believe it even more. That thing you’re already doing? Do it even more. ‘Atta boy. Have a cookie. Peace.”
Jolyon’s dream came true when he stumbled across trans theory. Finally, he gets to talk down to people in full sanctimony mode… and people will praise him for it!
I’ve seen links to the article but I’ve put off reading it because there’s only so much self-infatuated codswallop I can swallow in one day. It’s going to be a difficult read, isn’t it, even with Pink News’ in-house style of single sentence paragraphs and one-syllable-or-fewer words?
At least Maugham is in many ways a repeatedly self-giving gift. For instance, I love mentioning the fox/kimono* thing because it always results in a flurry of people saying “honestly, you brutally and needlessly smash in the head of one fox while wearing a kimono and you get a reputation for it. It’s not as though he brutally and needlessly smashes in the heads of foxes (while wearing a kimono) all the time, you know.”
Like clockwork. Without fail. Brilliant stuff.
* I never really know why the kimono is significant, but it definitely is.
I find the kimono significant because people know the kimono scene from Silence of the Lambs, so it adds a nice layer of “this guy is mental”. Not to mention an element of “is this why he is so invested in the ideology?”
