His boob envy
Hey, whatever moves the product, right? If it’s a man talking about his boobs right next to a row of murdered women, them’s the breaks.
On your left, murdered women; on your right, a man “making her pronouns permanent” and “shouting down abuse.”
The whole thread is worth reading. There are loads and loads of people outraged by both the placement of the story by the Guardian, the decision to run that story today, when there’s nothing time sensitive about it at all, and the fact that Eddie Izzard is an entitled tit.
People are being peaked. The wall is crumbling. Being optimistic causes me physical, visceral pain, but I’m cautiously heading in that direction. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still a lot of awful, insane stuff going on. But it feels like people are slowly starting to notice.
Does the word ‘tit’ carry the same meaning as in Britain?
I’m British and was using it in the standard British way (when not referring to actual breasts): pompous idiot.
Sorry, you could have said prick. But, I can’t help but be aware of nuance in language. Actually, I,
‘m the most umpompous person you could ever meet, although I may be an idiot.
Sue,
I wasn’t accusing you of being a pompous idiot, I was explaining the usage of the word “tit” in this context.
She said, pompously.
I hope so, I really do. The reactions to local events in the US (the South in particular) worry me. Maybe the US is behind the UK in that regard; I suspect it is.
Sackbut,
There’s a long way to go. There are a lot of sunk costs. But there are a lot of angry, determined, intelligent, creative women who won’t stand for this any longer, too.
Sue r – aware of nuance in language? You don’t seem to be aware of the (not very subtle) distinction between fact and opinion.
So basically, latsot, you use tit in the same way we use twit? Makes sense to me.
Wait, what? For sure, tits are birds, aren’t they? Around where I live, Great tits and Blue tits are the most common. But there are also Marsh tits, Willow tits, Siberian tits, Coal tits, Crested tits, and Long-tailed tits. There are even Bearded tits, but they are more distant relatives, I think.
Iknklast:
Yeah, “twit” is pretty close, I think. But “tit” probably implies a bit more contempt.
Harold:
Tits are birds, breasts and pompous idiots. They can be three things. We often have all three in the garden.
Bush tits are around here a lot. They build nests that are kind of like socks made of moss with bits of paper towel & other stuff woven in. One often finds them on the ground after the chicks have hatched (the nests, not the birds). I’ve always used “tits” as slang for breasts; I prefer it to “boobs,” which sounds more disparaging…but then “tit” doesn’t also mean fool / jerk / pest here (US).
The tits around here outnumber the pricks by about 2 to 1. :P
(sorry, just being a boob)
I am well aware of the difference between fact and opinion, I am also aware of the difference between believing or knowing something that is true and can be substantiated and believing or knowing something based on emotion. I fi d it amazing, and can only regard it as an example of closing ranks, that you do not find it odd at all that using expressions that describe female sexual characteristics as a way of disparaging people, and yet you complain men are trying to usurp such characteristics. It’s not like there are a plentitude of words to describe foolish people.
I’m happy to call Izzard a prick instead, he’s certainly that too. In fact, my previous use of “bellend” was probably spot on.
You Americans really need to work on your insults. Contempt is a spectrum, you know, not a binary ;)
Sue r:
I hesitate before using gendered insults and I did here. I judged that it was fairly harmless and I do not apologise, but I’m always happy to accept that my judgement was wrong.
Note that nobody has closed ranks. Nobody has defended my use of the word and I doubt anyone will. Why would they? One of the characteristics of this community is that everyone thinks and speaks for themselves. There are no ranks and closing them would achieve nothing. There’s no united front. People here disagree all the time.
This seems to contradict your statements on the other thread where you make claims about other people’s internal mental state as though it were fact, though you can’t possibly know it.
Sue r @ 14 –
If that’s true it’s very odd that you ignored the differences in your comments on Piers Morgan & Meghan Markle, in which you made a bunch of flat assertions about Markle’s mental state. I think maybe you’re not as aware of the difference as you think you are, or maybe you’re aware of it when it’s put to you as such – “the difference between fact and opinion” – but not in practice, when it’s a matter of claims that don’t come labeled as either fact or opinion.
Speaking for myself, I initially thought latsot’s use of ‘tit’ was uncharacteristic of him, but a moment of reflection led me to the conclusion that it was a riff on Izzard’s claim of suffering boob-envy, and as such hit the mark perfectly.
It’s all in the context, Sue r.
I can substantiate what I said about Princess Meghan’s mental state, I just choose not to because life is too short. If I said Process Meghan has appalling dress sense, that would be an opinion dress sense is not scientifically defined, although there are certain principle of Western aesthetics and colour theory that may be relevant, but ultimately, it is a question of taste. Are you all getting stoked on Princess Meghan as the Democratic Presidential candidate. What a woman, from ,Buck House to the White House via Princess Ariel.
Oh come on. Life isn’t too short for you to make a lot of wild assertions but it is too short for you to substantiate them. Please.
Yes of course dress sense is an opinion, and it’s also trivial. I wouldn’t bother arguing with your opinion of her dress sense. Saying she’s a liar is in another category.
And I’ve already said that I don’t particularly care about Markle one way or the other. Of course I’m not “getting stoked on Princess Meghan as the Democratic Presidential candidate” – what a fatuous accusation.
You’re pretty much trolling now, so please stop.
