Feminists evicted from Feminist Library
The Feminist Library, not detectably feminist at all, at least not on Twitter.
The Feminist Library @feministlibrary
Celebrating 45 years of archiving & activism. Community space & library. Trans-inclusive & welcomes visitors of all genders. We’ve moved to a new Peckham home!
Notice anything? No mention of women. No mention of women’s rights. No mention of the struggle for women’s rights. What does “feminism” mean then? Apparently it means being trans-inclusive and welcoming visitors of all genders.
To ram the point home (and I do mean ram), they make a Statement.
So there you go. Men who “identify as” women are welcome, feminist women are not. Feminism is now for men who appropriate the category “women,” while genuinely feminist women are kicked to the curb.
I read this part and got all excited:
O-kay! They’re going to define gender, define sex, and make inroads on that explanation re TWAW. And then I look and see:
We understand gender and sex as constructed categories with meanings that have changed over time and are dependent on time periods, geographical location, culture, amongst a range of other factors.
Categories of what? How do they differ? Nothing. It’s all a lot of fluffy guff about not defining “womanhood” through “biological essentialism” and talk about how race and class lead to keeping women out of “what constitutes a woman.” Which, whatever it is (not spelled out of course) includes black women, working class women, and some men.
Womanhood has to be earned and achieved, damn it! We’re inclusive of ALL women who do something to earn womanhood. What have these silly people with XX chromosomes done to achieve womanhood? Nothing at all. They just sat on their fat asses. As a courtesy, we generously allow them to step foot in the library (along with people of ALL genders), but only if they behave themselves and stop claiming to own womanhood.
Ok so now I hafta read it. Urrgh.
Sex is a constructed category. As in, not an independently observable phenomenon, but something that did not exist until we made it.
These idiots have let their brains fall out of their heads.
It’s true in the sense that the word is a human invention. This kind of thing always plays on that confusion between the word and the reality. The word is social therefore it’s social all the way down!!! Squawk!!!!!
“Virulent attacks”, eh? Funny how the only evidence they can ever show is someone going “humans can’t change sex though”. Meanwhile, there are entire mountain ranges building up of virulent attacks and threats of violence and death and rape fantasies against women who say “humans can’t change sex though”.
