“President Trump is still liable for everything he did in office. He hasn’t gotten away with anything yet,” Mr McConnell said.
Just because WE let him off, doesn’t mean everyone else has to.
“We have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil litigation. And former presidents are not immune from being held accountable by either one.”
At least future Juries will not have co-conspirators making up halt their numbers.
Agreed, GW. We all knew acquittal was a foregone conclusion, the question was rather how close it would be. The important thing is that the votes are on public record, and every Rep that protected Trump has provided ammunition to their next Dem challenger.
I bristled at all the “voted to acquit” headlines. I think “didn’t meet the threshold to convict” is more accurate since a majority (but not the necessary 2/3) wanted to convict.
Here’s hoping every person injured or traumatized by the events of January 6 sues Trump and wins.

The problem is that the soonest Senatorial elections are in nearly 21 months, and the furthest are in nearly six years. People have very short memories — and many of the people that will be voters in six years are currently children.
I’m not impressed by the six Republicans who voted to convict this time, but not last time around. They bear responsibility for all the horrors of the last year. Only Romney stood up when it really mattered.
I take some heart in the fact that only one of my senators is on that list. I never expected Fischer to do anything to buck the GOP, and she has no integrity, so I’m not surprised at her vote. Sasse did vote to convict, but should have done so last year. During the election cycle, he was tempering his criticism of Trump. I don’t know, maybe I should be somewhat forgiving, because if he hadn’t, we probably would have had a full throated Trumpista for our other senator.
Considering what may happen to Cheeto over the next couple of years, how much will their campaigns in ’22 actually benefit from the Fascist Looney vote?

While I don’t imagine being convicted of multiple crimes would change much of the support of his base, I suspect their support doesn’t transfer to his enablers anyway. I imagine it’s more prevention of a negative impact than any positive support. I’m not sure Trump’s “charisma” (I think someone here once used the term charisn’tma) transfers in any way. It seems to be totally Trumpcentric.
But we have seen how quickly they can turn on “turncoats” such as Mike Pence, so I suspect it’s more that than any expectation of gaining votes.

Isn’t Trump threatening to launch his own party? A dedicated Fascist Looney Party might split the right wing vote, which would benefit the Democrats in the short term. That doesn’t remedy the real problem. It would still mean that there are tens of millions of Fascist Loonies on the loose in the US.
YNnB, I’ve heard that…and there are apparently some other Republicans talking about still another party. Do it, boys. Split the GOP into splinters, lose a couple of elections.
The problem is, the Dems are so fragmented these days it’s hard to see if they would be able to capitalize on it.
Isn’t Moscow Mitch a nice piece of work?

I’m nonetheless enheartened that 57 Senators voted to convict, as opposed to 48 a year ago.

I can see it now. “There are exactly fifty-seven card-carrying members of the Communist Party in the Senate at this time!”

I was going to take some heart that Toomy (R-PA) voted to convict despite being a complete tool but I see he’s retiring next year.
