15 tons of rotting fish
For nine straight days, waves of dead fish have washed ashore along downtown St. Petersburg and Coquina Key [Florida], plaguing residents with the intolerable stench.
City officials say over 100 miles of coastline have been impacted, with the worst areas being along the east and southeast coast of St. Pete — Tierra Verde to Gandy Blvd.
The city is working to clean up the mess and has collected over 25,000 dead fish in the past 10 days, along with 15,000 dead fish on July 9, alone. The number of dead fish amounts to over 15 tons.
Much of Florida is doomed because of the rising seas. I don’t recommend moving there.
I didn’t need dead fish to convince me not to move to Florida. Their governor was more than enough to do that.
I envision Donnie Dipshit washing up like this, replete with the intolerable stench. If only… :P
I lived in Pinellas County for a summer internship. One of the nastiest places I have ever lived. Physically (Florida development is some of the ugliest in the country), sprawl wise, and culturally (the Church of Scientology practically ran Clearwater). Hated the weather, too. Humid, thunderstroms every afternoon just as you were getting off work and wanted to do something outside. And…the people. I am sorry, but…
I think that the same things will start happening along the Gulf Coast, including New Orleans (which is also doomed by rising seas.) Due to agricultural runoff that flows down the Mighty Mississip’ and other rivers, there are growing dead zones in the gulf as well. Algae loves the excess fertilizer but creates anoxic zones that fish and shrimp can’t abide.
