Won’t somebody please think of the cruise industry?
A CNBC reporter:
You have got to be kidding.
Why do the cruise companies have offshore registration? Not for a hobby, not to be whimsical, not to give Offhshorelandia a boost. No, they have it for the purposes of not paying taxes and not obeying labor laws.
Given that, why on earth is a Senate group working to ensure they can have our money anyway?
Large companies are lining up hat in hand with a pretence of hard times. Small businesses really need to be prioritised at times like these, they don’t have the cash reserves of a multinational or even national franchise. And if they go out of business because large companies were first in line for taxpayer money, the large company in that business niche wins a second time: they can expand into whatever area the small business had. The monopolies increase.
That’s an industry that isn’t essential, as far as I can see. We got Legionnaire’s outbreaks from them, other sick ships, environmental horrors like Costa Concordia, and now CV-19. Working conditions for employees are slave-like, all for the arrogant entitlement and indulgence of far richer people. It’s a moral nightmare.
Yes.It is surprisin. Normally, the elected representatives of America might as well be flights of angels. I can’t work it out at all.
Best I can offer: their star signs could all be unfavourably aligned.
And there is more to hate about the cruise industry even than that. The impact on destination towns can be horrific. I was working in Dubrovnik once when a cruise ship arrived (as they did twice a week, then). It dwarfed the city. It practically blocked out the sun. All those lovely little alleys selling local, traditional food to locals were infested.
I’ve been as guilty in the past of tourism as anyone else and I realise how important the tourist industry is for a lot of places but these cruise motherfuckers are something else.
And why would anyone set foot on one of those ships anyway? Even pre-corona there seemed hardly a week without news of some disease or other breaking out on a cruise ship. Although I can’t help but feel that sitting in my cabin vomiting might be preferable to mixing with some of the other passengers.
