The Donald Trump of mid-19th C France was very arguably Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, of whom Karl Marx wrote his famous line about history repeating itself:”the first as tragedy, then as farce. ” He was referring to Napoleon I then Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III.) Except of course that Louis Napoleon staged a full-on coup d’etat and installed himself as Emperor. Trump has not yet tried that, but watch this space.
After many years of both observing and participating in politics, I have come very very reluctantly to the conclusion that taken overall, we participants in democratic and electoral politics get the politicians we deserve. Sad, but true. Though in the American electorate’s defence, we should note that Trump is only in office thanks to a quirk in the electoral college system, as more Americans voted against him than voted for him.
