Top 5
These guys are so lucky to live at this hour – when suddenly misogyny is the most progressive thing on the menu, as long as you can shield it with the pretense of “transphobia.” Ten years ago it just would not have been cool to call a female novelist one of the 5 worst people on Twitter, but now it makes you…well it makes you a misogynist shit, but Craig Gallagher seems not to realize it.
I’m willing to bet he doesn’t know what JKR’s views even are.
I think I don’t know what her supposed crimes are either. All I know is that she’s “transphobic.” What is it that she supposed to have done?
I would be curious to see some reliable public polling data on this. I suspect that >80% of the population holds views that would be considered “transphobic” by woke Twitter standards. I would be curious to know the reaction of the general population to the knowledge that these clowns are threatening to kill anyone who doesn’t accept their views.
>80%? I’ll go one better. Or…10 better. I’d bet that >90% of people hold commonplace ideas that have become “suddenly” heretical.
Ben @2:
Her greatest thoughtcrime seems to have been tweeting:
It was Decided that this was transphobic for about nine reasons that make between little and zero sense. For example “call yourself whatever you like” is supposedly transphobic because it suggests that trans people are roleplaying. “Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you” has been decreed transphobic because it supposedly implies that having sex with trans people is somehow abnormal. And so on.
But most of the pretend outrage (regarding this tweet) is based on Rowling’s support of Maya Forstater and therefore the unforgivable idea that sex is real.
Her most recent crime (and the thing that’s stirred up all this new hyperbole) was to (perfectly reasonably) threaten legal action against people on Twitter who claimed she was a danger to children and compared her directly to the staggeringly prolific and British establishment-sponsored paedophile Jimmy Savile. Because she has expressed an opinion that trans women are trans women. The rhetoric that’s hatched, misshapen from this toadspawn is that she is an evil, powerful woman(*) who uses her power and money to silence ‘critics’ (ie, people who call her a paedophile).
(*) that’s the worst part, of course.
Thank you very much. I had heard all of those things, but I assumed the recent condemnation had to be about something else. (I’m so innocent! Like a baby seal!) Because I suppose I could maybe see how someone could uncharitably construe those statements as less than 100% faultless. But to turn them into a reason for calling Rowling hateful, horrible, and so on is the kind of irrational, bombastic outrage I still don’t want to believe is the new normal.
