Thing is, I suspect people like that (and those who lean on their every utterance) actually believe that competence is in fact dressing well, sounding convincing and using lots of jargon, then rushing off to the next meeting to rinse and repeat. It’s probably because for a lot of people in business and politics that is how they get by and succeed. Other people actually do the work that makes shit happen. Other people actually have the expertise to make the general gist of what you want come about.
Because these people don’t even begin to understand what is involved in gaining actual subject matter expertise and maintaining that expertise, they can’t appreciate it and therefore don’t value it. Same with their believers. It’s like we live in separate worlds that overlap and see each other through a mirror darkly.
And straight after that the first Popehat tweet I see is this one.
