I keep thinking “imagine trying this bullshit with race – imagine white guys saying they ‘identify as’ black and trying to bully black people into agreeing.” Now we can see an actual example in the wild.
I think I really like this woman. She tells it like it is. White, middle-class to rich males put on woman-face and tell black females they cannot speak? Shame on you, Critically Speaking.
But they didn’t do it with race. They did it with sex, as per usual.
Unless I’m just not following the exchange. (I find it very difficult to sort how who’s saying what to/about whom when I get dropped into the middle of these Twitter streams.)
Steven – Well they did in the sense that they talked the usual censorious shit about and removed the podcast of a black woman who was talking about race, at their invitation. They treated the trans issue as trumping the race issue, and as worth badmouthing and kicking out a black woman.
The first words from the cancellation notice – It has come to our attention… – whatever could they mean? Oh, yes, I’ve a vague recollection of something similar happening, maybe just once or twice. Something about some snide little shits bombarding the organisers of events with demands to cancel a person they have judged guilty of tweeting Bad Things, usually without providing specific evidence of Bad Things said, just the nature of the non-approved actions committed by the culprit along with demands that the organisers ensure that the sentence of cancellation for life is carried out, unless they wish to join the list of the condemned, that is.
I don’t think it’s a common occurrence though. It can’t be. Can it?
I have a lot of sympathy for Ms Douglas. However, there is a good reason why a White hierarchy has dominated Welsh culture forever. It is simply that until very recently there were vanishingly few non-White people in Wales. In my school of 1150 pupils in the late seventies there was one pupil of Indian origin, and that was it for BAME representation, unless the two Jews counted. Yet I suspect Llanelli was a model of diversity compared to much of the country.
The Patriarchy was much, much more of a thing. Wales was a country run by and for the benefit of older men. And possibly still is, as the case of Ms Douglas illustrates.
Parts of Wales, most notably Tiger Bay in Cardiff, has long had a non-white population. The singer Shirley Bassey was born in Cardiff in 1937. I’ve never been to Cardiff, but I’ve been to some more touristic parts of Wales, where, I agree, non-white people are not abundant.
I can attest to this growing up in the South Wales Valleys in the 1980s. 99.99% white. In fact, until moving away, I’d literally never met a black or Asian person who wasn’t a doctor.
If I remember rightly, Tiger Bay got that nickname because it had so many immigrants living there. It was the disembarkment point for many ships carrying immigrants who settled there rather than venturing any further. Why they didn’t move to other places I don’t know. Maybe once a small community had settled it was natural to join them, maybe they were discouraged from going further for various reasons.
Wales is practically rural. I mean, I live in it’s second-largest city and I can tell you how many residential buildings with more than ten floors there are – three. They are landmarks. You’re never more than a few minutes drive from either an elevated spot or an open area from which you can see at least one of them. What I’m saying is, if anyone knows the reason why there are not many non-white people in Little Piddlington in the Cotswolds – that’s also why there are not many in Llangrannog.
I did once work an entire day in an area of Cardiff where I only noticed in the afternoon that I hadn’t seen any white people all day, not counting my reflection in the rear-view mirror. It was warm and sunny, and I was right under the mosque’s speakers when the call to prayer went out. I got home feeling like I’d been on the world’s most tedious holiday.

“Critically Speaking” NOT!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
That’s a great joke!

But did they check her pronouns first?
