The real question
Laurie Penny is at it again.
Will you look at that. ” The question is ‘are trans women people?’” No it isn’t! Nobody says trans women are not people. Skeptics of trans dogma say trans women are men, and correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure men count as people.
Bingo.
But this is lovely! If the question is, and has always been, “are trans women people who deserve safety, dignity, and protection from violence like anyone else?” then the whole big kerfluffle is OVER. What a silly misunderstanding this has been.
Without knowing who Laurie Penny is, one might assume it was a Gender Critical feminist trying to point out that GCFs are not bigots nor transphobic, because they know the REAL question. This, then, is practically an own goal — or would be, if TransRightsActivsts could bring themselves to recognize that people who reject the trans ideology are human beings deserving of etc. etc.
From the standpoint of the TRAs, the real question is: Do transwomen have the right to insist that there should be no spaces designated as single-sex spaces, where the opposite sex is excluded, for the safety of females. They have plainly answered yes; we plainly answer no. Thereby hangs a tale.
@Iknklast #2:
I don’t agree. If Trans Women are not only Women but also Female, then they’ll happily agree that women’s single-sex spaces should exist. Let’s all go in, girls! Just, no.
From the standpoint of the TRAs then the real question might be: “are Trans Women a type of Woman, or a type of Man?” Or, if they’re going to insist on throwing “man” and “woman” into the nebulous “gender” category — “are they female?”
It’s really the same question you’re asking, but I’ve seen so many TRAs act as if we think the question is “Can some women be allowed to kick other women out of single-sex spaces?” to not want to shove it back as far from that sort of semantic nonsense as I can.
Yes, Sastra, that would seem to be the terms of the debate, but there are many of them arguing in spite of that that single-sex spaces should not exist. The real battle is for gender neutral bathrooms, changing rooms, etc. When women ask for single-sex spaces, we are considered transphobic.
So, logically, their quest should be for single-sex spaces that include them, but in actuality they are arguing against single-sex spaces a lot of the time. But then, who ever accused them of being consistent?
My head hurts.
Wait, if you can’t go into a ladies’ washroom, you’re not a person?
When I was just a little girl,
I asked my mother “What will I be?
“Will I be happy, will I be rich?”
Here’s what she said to me:
“You’re a boy, you dumb fuck! Now get out of your sister’s clothes and piss off to school!”
Re #7
OK, sirrah, sirrah, that was great!
This is a Trump-grade willingness to lie. If Laurie disagrees, she can feel free to point out a source on the left that considers trans women not women and not people and not deserving of safety, dignity, protection from violence.
@Sackbut – well played, sir. Well played.
