News from the office of the Texas Attorney General:
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today filed a lawsuit against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in the United States Supreme Court.
Uh huh. The old “suing states that didn’t vote the way you want” trick. When I say “old” I mean “I never heard of that before.”
The Michigan Attorney General is not impressed.
Texas went for Trump, y’all should be proud, and leave the rest of us the hell alone. Make him Governor of Texas if you want him that badly. I hear even losers are bigger in Texas, and Trump’s the biggest.
The gimmick here is that, as you may know, the Supreme Court has “original and exclusive jurisdiction” over suits between the states — meaning that it is one of the rare kinds of cases that BEGINS at SCOTUS. It happens once in a while, usually dealing with boundary disputes or water rights. (Typically the Court refers those cases to a “special master” who conducts the actual trial and makes findings of fact to be reviewed by the Court — I’m not sure when was the last time there was an actual trial conducted at SCOTUS.)
Trumpalos are obsessed with the notion that, whatever these silly lower court judges (many of whom are staunch conservatives, some of them appointed by Trump) may be doing, SCOTUS will rescue Trump, so the sooner they can get a case there the better. This suit is an attempt to bring SCOTUS in quickly by filing there directly instead of having to go through all that tedious procedural stuff like filing appeals correctly.
Of course, like all the efforts of the Trump Super Duper Elite Legal Strike Force Team, it’s as much about self-promotion as anything else. Speculation is that the Texas AG, who is under investigation by the FBI for corruption so bad that most of his own staff turned him in, is bucking for a pardon.
And of course it is of highly dubious merit legally.
I can’t imagine what standing Texas has to complain about the election procedures of other states.
maddog, if you’ve never been to Texas, you might not know that they think everything is supposed to revolve around them. (Hey, maybe they’re a trans state?)
