Strong to the right, weak to the left
A woman protesting Tennessee’s COVID-19 lockdown this week carried a startling sign that recommended sacrificing “weak” people to reopen the state’s economy.
Local news station News Channel 9 has captured a photo of the sign, which read, “Sacrifice the weak — reopen TN [Tennessee].”
It was a small protest, with “dozens” of people.
The station also reports that many of the people at the rally were not practicing social distancing and were not wearing protective face masks, as has been recommended by public health officials as a way to slow down the spread of the disease.
So I guess they’re sacrificing themselves. Maybe that’s what the sign meant?
“Sacrifice the weak”
They used to call that “eugenics” and those on the political right used to be against it.
Apparently the Texas lieutenant governor has stated that there are worse things than dying. (Yeah, if you’re not the one dying.) Bet he doesn’t think that if it is a bundle of cells that will develop eventually into a human baby.
Oh, I dunno. It would depend on what the writer of the sign meant by ‘weak’.
‘Sacrifice the weak-brained.’ That could seriously backfire as a sign. Especially in Nashville, where I suspect open-carry and that bit of the Constitution which permits such is not unknown. “Well, Your Honour. I was just doing as that poor deceased citizen requested. It was written right there as a request on that well-designed open-carry sign.”
Perhaps we should start practicing social media distancing. Might reduce our exposure to this virulent strain of stupid that seems to be ravaging the entire country.
At what point do we revoke Godwin’s Law?
When the arguments against social distancing started, I mused that they were engaging in human sacrifice. I meant it to be mild hyperbole, but no, this is literally just human sacrifice.
I’ve been doing that for years. Have no Facebook, no Twitter, no Instagram, no smart phone…just interact with people face to face, and of course, here on B&W. It hasn’t helped. I still am exposed to the most virulent strains of stupid. Oh, wait, maybe that’s because I live right in the middle of Trump central? Possibly…
My immediate response: “Do we have a fucking volunteer?”
@6 – yes. And because those being sacrificed will be disproportionately coloured, women and poor (and therefore not GOP base), the GOP politicians and string pullers don’t really give a rats. The poor and vulnerable in the GOP base misguidedly believe they will somehow not be affected personally. Possibly because they’ve bought the cool aide that Covid is a hoax and possibly because they just don’t understand how numbers work.
@8 – me too. I would usually avoid public confrontation in settings like that, but seeing that sign actually made me wish I could start asking the woman holding it questions.
