So far
Joe Biden appears to be on the cusp of the victory in the US presidential election, as the Democratic nominee grows his leads in Pennsylvania and Nevada.
“Grows his leads”? His leads grow, or increase, but he’s not “growing” them, like a tomato patch. Get a grip.
Here’s where the day stands so far:
Biden now leads Donald Trump by 13,220 votes in Pennsylvania, but the AP has not yet declared a winner in the state. Biden is clearly intending to declare victory, with plans to deliver a primetime address tonight.
Georgia will hold a recount to settle the virtual tie between Biden and Trump in the state. As of now, Biden leads Trump by just 1,558 votes in the state, where about 5 million ballots were cast in the presidential race.
Biden’s lead in Nevada grew to 20,137 votes, following an update from Clark county, where Las Vegas is located. But the AP has not yet called that state either, and a Clark county official said today that counting would continue through the weekend.
It’s been a long four days.
I’ve gotta say, living in Florida it’s embarrassing that Georgia is more blue than we are. I expected us to go cherry red but I figured Georgia would go deeper red than us.
Obviously written by someone with little or no tomato patch experience, and in one helluva hurry to boot. More snail bait needed, and hang the expense.
On the Georgia question…I just kept thinking “Atlanta.” John Lewis country.
The Atlanta counties are heavily blue, but I’m surprised that it’s this close, there seems to be a few blue counties in the Macon and Albany areas, along with Savannah, so it’s either changed a little, or Georgia Republicans have seen enough of Trump. The senate races here are going to be interesting also, with the possibility of flipping 2 seats. Nice living in a swing state when it’s swingin’ your way. :)
What the fuck. Four days and the result is still not known? Meanwhile in the rest of the world…
It’s because there were so many more mail-in votes because of the pandemic, and Republican legislatures refused to let the votes be counted early. Mail-in ballots take much longer to process.
twiliter,
When we first moved to Virginia about 25 years ago, it was pretty deep red (though they had just defeated Ollie North in the Senate race). But by 2008, it was a swing state that swung blue, and 2009 was the last time a Republican won a statewide race.
Yeah, it feels good.
Holms: As Ophelia points out, the biggest part of the delays are occurring in GOP-controlled states that delayed the start of vote-counting (or, more accurately, blocked attempts to start early counting in response to the extraordinary conditions of this election), specifically so they could get this scenario of votes seeming to come out of nowhere. Fortunately, Biden’s crew had their lawyers prepped and ready this time around, and so have been fending off 2000 Florida-esque attempts to stop the counting prematurely.
(And, of course, Trump and his Trumpeteers were naked in their hypocrisy, attempting to both stop the counting in any state where he had a lead, and calling for counting to continue in any state where Biden had the top spot. Biden, meanwhile, has been calling for all vote counting to continue according to the laws in each state.)
And, it’s important to remember that instant-gratification voting results are actually a recent historical anomaly. The whole reason the official process for declaring an official winner is so dragged out is that for much of the country’s history, you needed a fair bit of time to get all those ballots gathered up, tallied and reported. Hell, Inauguration Day used to be on March 4th. Can you imagine Trump with a month-and-a-half additional time to pull whatever shit he’s going to during the lame-duck period?
