Ah, I remember years ago being told on FTB that demographic slurs are never to be used, even against a ‘sufficiently bad’ person, as those slurs rely on an assumption that being a member of ____ demographic is a bad, insulting thing. Those days are long gone!
I don’t think Rowlings words harmed LGB people at all. I don’t even think they harmed anybody in any true sense of harm (hurt feelz doesn’t actually count as harm no matter how many fake tears are shed).
These claims are so blatantly dishonest yet they work on so many people. I suspect that the cleverest thing the trans lobby did was to attach themselves to the LGB movement despite having nothing to do with sexual orientation, thereby insinuating that any criticism of or opposition to transgender issues was by definition criticism and opposition to every group covered by the LGBTetc umbrella. The TRAs know that society is generally more accepting of LGB people than ever before, so instead of merely stating that criticism of the trans agenda affects trans people (which would in all likelihood get the response “well, no shit, Sherlock”) they instead 8 that LGB people are equally affected, and that is bound to make many who are supportive of LGB people reluctant to oppose the trans demands.
I wonder how differently all this would have played out if instead of riding the coat tails of the LGB movement they’d have began a seperate TQIA+ movement. Mind you, for a while it would have just been the T movement since it took a while for the identity fetishists to invent the ever-growing, more-special-than-you sub-identities, but had they gone it alone I doubt they’d be anything like the force they’ve become.
I don’t understand what these people want. Guards at the door of every restroom checking everyone’s genitals? That sounds like it would be a whole lot worse than having to pee in the same room as a trans person.
Another:
They want trans people to not exist. To be forced out of public life altogether, and preferably not to live in private either. If trans people die, they’re okay with that. So long as they’re gone.
I am continually shocked at how uninterested people are in what their ideological opponents say.
I saw “gotcha!” comments today on some Twitter thing saying that radical feminists are wrong that you can’t change your biology because—boom!—what about dyeing your hair??
I keep seeing evidence that people don’t so much disagree with gender-critical feminism as completely misunderstand or ignore its arguments. Thus, “radical feminists are gender essentialists!” “Radical feminists reduce women to their body parts!” “Radical feminists don’t think trans people exist!”
I suppose it’s kind of inevitable though, given the fact that the whole “movement” is based on an utterly fatuous doctrine: that an idea in the head can change what sex you are. If you’re the type to believe that you’re the type to ignore everything critics say, rail at critics for saying things that critics don’t say, and so on.
Considering the so-called Equality Act in the USA has and will continue to be roadkill unless the House, the Senate and the Presidency are all taken at the same time by the Dems, this claim is also quite false. Any of the Rowling stuff, either from about 6 months ago or recently, could not have had anything to do with that Act.
But, hey! Why think the trans cult gender woowoo crowd care about truth!
If a few tweets from a foreign author of children’s books can utterly devastate the success of your social movement, then your movement has gone terribly astray somewhere (or was ill-conceived to begin with).
No one is surprised anymore that bad racist ideas are accompanied by threats of violence against people who challenge their cherished myths. That it’s driven in part by misogyny also isn’t novel.
The so-called Equality Bill passed in the House but it is dead on the floor in the Senate as long as the Republicans hold the Senate. And even if it passed the Senate, Trump could still veto it. So, dead for now but could come alive again IF the Dems get all a big win in November.

I remember that too. Up in smoke it is.
No, no, it’s still bad.
Unless it’s about women.
You could ask the UN about that. I’m sure they’d agree.

I know. It’s very irritating.

In somewhat related news, Reddit shut downs both r/GenderCritical and r/Gender_Critical for “hate”.
Is the Equality Act really stalled?
I’ve been singularly unable to convince my rep that it’s bad for women, even though he is D, minority, and gay.

Colin, #10. Yeah, PZ has a post up celebrating it.

I didn’t realise JKR had so much power. I, for one, welcome our new overlord.
