Ok time’s up
Trump is restless. Trump wants all this to stop now. Trump thinks two weeks are MORE than enough, because that’s what he wants.
“WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF,” Trump tweeted late Sunday night. “AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!”
SHOUTING AT US SO THAT WE WOULD KNOW HE REALLY MEANT IT.
Aides say Trump is itching for the guidelines to be eased when the 15-day period ends a week from Monday, but realistically there are few health experts who think that’s enough time to know whether the measures he announced last week– including recommending closing schools, limiting gatherings and keeping at least 6 feet of distance between individuals — will suffice.
So what?! There’s an election approaching!
The dynamic has led to a robust internal debate over how best to balance the actual health of the country — with potentially hundreds of thousands of lives at stake — with its economic health.
By “robust internal debate” they of course mean screaming tantrums.
This is scary. Most of the articles I’ve read quote experts saying the shelter-in-place strategy needs to go on for a pretty long time or it would have been worthless. Months, perhaps. But if Trump calls for an “all clear” there’ll be a combination of prudent people in place and others breaking out — and no breaks for the first group.
Jeezus, we might have to rely on Pence here.
Yes, if Trump lifts the controls in place we’ll certainly see a catastrophic growth in the number of cases well before the health care system is ready for it. I think we’d see many states outright defy Trump at that point, as they should because Trump is a nut who knows nothing and only cares about himself.
Maybe he’s having trouble getting his hamberders.
But probably it’s more that his hotels are doing poorly.
Trump as President in WWII:
December 7, 1941: “This is a day that will live forever in… uh, people’s memories. That’s a long, long time. Some people are saying it’s the longest time. Anyway, we’re going to do whatever it takes to crush Japan like nobody’s ever seen before.”
December 14, 1941: “You know, we can’t allow this war to drag on and hurt our economy. I’ve asked the Emperor — who’s a very nice guy, we get along quite well — for his terms.”
15 days huh. Our Government has implemented a 28 day shutdown and is saying that will be the minimum time.
They’ve offered a stark choice. Economic hardship or tens of thousands dead. I haven’t heard anyone opt for the tens of thousands dead yet.
What I’m picking up from my Idiot Decoder ring: in 15 days, he will ‘decide’ that the virus is gone and can the stock market please please stop going down please.
Tens of thousands dead will be economic hardship… The economy isn’t going to improve by pretending this isn’t happening.
Isn’t that obvious?
Sastra – The Imperial College paper that caused the UK to change course modelled the effect of measures for 5 months. All that accomplishes is reducing the amplitude of the spike, and pushing it to circa October, allowing emergency capacity to be built up.
For the US, a 15 day interval is close to meaningless. The outbreaks in the SE (Florida and Louisiana are both escalating faster than Lombardy did) are lagging New York by a week, Washington by at least two. if there is freedom of movement across those outbreaks, you just restart the cycle.
The fundamental theory is that your clampdown measures have to last 15 days after your last new case unless you have containment and contact tracing in place allowing every single instance to be quarantined. The US is nowhere close to either of those conditions.
15 days is forever for someone with no impulse control.
Yes, but he’s a really smart guy who’s right a lot of times. He’s got a good feeling about 15 days. Besides, that sounds like a lot of work (none of which Trump would actually have to do), and altogether too many big words to fit onto the pages of his jumbo print note binder.
I say let him go out after 15 days, then slap him in quarantine for a couple of weeks. During that time he could wait for a test to become available; once it is, Jared could administer it. During quarantine, Trump could learn to wash and reuse his mask in some of those great liquids, and Dr. Fauci could use him as a test subject for that “treatment” Trump’s so eager to roll out. It might save us from more of his Nuremberg pressers, which will save us from tearing our own heads off listening to him.
