No thanks, no more vaccine for us
Brilliant. Trump scores again. Absolute genius.
Trump administration officials passed when Pfizer offered in late summer to sell the U.S. government additional doses of its Covid-19 vaccine, according to people familiar with the matter. Now Pfizer may not be able provide more of its vaccine to the United States until next June because of its commitments to other countries, they said.
Thanks, Don! That’ll be a few hundred thousand more deaths because you’re such a genius. What was the plan? That Ivanka would design an awesome vaccine and you could rake in all the profits?
As the administration scrambles to try to purchase more doses of the vaccine, President Trump plans on Tuesday to sign an executive order “to ensure that United States government prioritizes getting the vaccine to American citizens before sending it to other nations,” according to a draft statement and a White House official, though it was not immediately clear what force the president’s executive order would carry.
Blah blah blah executive order blah everybody has to give all of it to us before anybody else gets any by order of me Donald Trump because I say so blah blah. Piss in the wind some more why doncha.
The vaccine being produced by Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech, is a two-dose treatment, meaning that 100 million doses is enough to vaccinate only 50 million Americans.
…
Asked if the Trump administration had missed a crucial chance over the summer to snap up more doses for Americans, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services said, “We are confident that we will have 100 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine as agreed to in our contract, and beyond that, we have five other vaccine candidates.”
That wasn’t the question.
This seems an appropriate time and place for this tweet. it made me very sad and more than a little angry at the selfishness of so many of our fellow humans.
As annoying as that is, what’s problematic is that no one will say, in the media, that what is happening, what trump and the rest of the republicans are doing, is completely intentional, willful. They mean it.
Meanwhile, I just found out that our HR is refusing requests for remote work in the spring for people with pre-existing conditions that make them higher risk. Their answer is a resounding NO! Their answer is “why should we care if you die?” And for what? So the campus looks vibrant and lively…so parents who visit will see all the activity and people and be impressed. What sort of parent would choose a college for their children where the administration thinks it is a good idea to expose their employees, faculty, and students to a potentially lethal virus during a pandemic?
Sounds like your legal department needs to have a word with your HR department. I’m not an expert on ADA compliance, but working remotely sure seems to me like a “reasonable accommodation” for such people.
What’s worse, Screechy, is that our HR head is a lawyer. But they have spent the last (at least) 15 years giving training after training on ADA while suggesting implicitly what they don’t say explicitly, that ADA applies only to students, and employees and faculty are not covered. I know better…most of our faculty apparently don’t. I have had that conversation repeatedly with faculty who come out of one of those “trainings” convinced that we are not covered by the ADA.
Fortunately, my doctor is on the local COVID task force, and has stated that he is more than a little concerned because my asthma is uncontrolled (and apparently uncontrollable, since it has been uncontrolled for 35 years in spite of strong medications) and since I am also diabetic, I have a double whammy. My therapist would also be willing to give me a statement that my anxiety makes it impossible for me to work on-site right now, but I do not want to open that can of worms. I would rather they don’t know I have a therapist.
So apparently, people who tend to suffer serious allergies to food or other allergens are having a bad reaction to the new Pfizer vaccine. (From NPR this morning). That is worrisome, both from a health standpoint but also from a vaccine take up perspective.
