Ivanka goes slumming
The princess wants us to know that she really really cares about poor people.
Remember that story her friend from school told about her (cough) lack of interest in poor people?
In the most scathing passage, Ohrstrom claimed that in their mid-20s she recommended to her friend the book Empire Falls, a Pulitzer prize-winning novel by Richard Russo about working-class characters in a small town in Maine.
“‘Ly, why would you tell me to read a book about fucking poor people?’ I remember Ivanka saying,” she wrote. “‘What part of you thinks I would be interested in this?’”
Not that it isn’t obvious without the story. Her “business” was selling expensive tat, her “work” for Daddy’s business involved marketing expensive real estate, her presentation of self is entirely Disney Princess. She probably jingles when she walks.
There is a sort of delicious irony that the kind of people who want to buy Ivanka-branded clothes, etc. are generally the kind of people that Ivanka would never associate with.
Oh lort, I laughed and laughed at this. When you turn a phrase, Ophelia, you turn it ALL the way.
I think it’s a good thing for her to do, but it would have meant more if she didn’t tweet about it. So being seen being charitable looks like it’s more important than simply being charitable, which has the scent of political agenda to it. Now if she and hubby quietly join the Giving Pledge I will be a lot less cynical.
twiliter@3:
Indeed. Although she’s not christian, I think the following from the new testatment applies to pretty princess Ivanka:
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”
Some good allegory there James. The humanitarians among us are not generally self centered social climbers, whether religious or not, but the effort she makes is not completely worthless either, it is at least something. You wouldn’t see her daddy doing charitable grunt work, which is something I love about guys like Jimmy Carter, and despise about guys like Trump and his ilk.
I don’t think it’s a good thing for her to do at all. I think it’s revolting. She makes it clear enough that she did it entirely for the public relations effect. She must have alerted the media, especially the photographers. She tweeted and tweeted and tweeted about it. She wore a sweet little dress with puffed sleeves. She’s an absolute horror.
Maybe she’s trying to compensate for her daddy. A pissed off Chris Cuomo goes on a pretty interesting 10 minute rant >> https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2020/12/24/trump-worst-president-cuomo-open-cpt-vpx.cnn
This is what gets me, why don’t more people see how awful he is?
@6 Well she could have easily not done it. Maybe someone benefitted from her doing it however much of a photo op/social media stunt it was to her.
Well, I suspect that Ivanka’s little photo-op did not in fact benefit anyone, apart from herself (or so she at least thought). Because of the preparations needed for it (Secret Service, photographers at the ready, competent people who could have done the job efficiently pushed out of the way, etc), I suspect that it hindered the real workers and slowed down what could have been done far more competently.
I’m with Ophelia. There’s nothing admirable about this photo op. I’d be more impressed if she spent the whole day there without tweeting about it; better yet, she should be donating a sizable chunk of cash to the organization or, even better, using whatever political clout she has to get the government to give real, permanent help to people in need (via healthcare care, child care, decent affordable housing, unemployment insurance, etc.).
As for helping people, if anything all the time out she took for the photo ops probably slowed things down.
In other words, what Tim said.
And the LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME of it just makes me want to smash things. Remember, these are all HER tweets. LOOK AT ME BEING HELPY IN MY CUTE BRAID AND MY SPOTTY DRESS AREN’T I GORGEOUS AND ADORABLE PLUS CHARITY???
What kind of vile shit does some very trivial superfluous “helping” at a food bank and then brags about it, complete with glam photos, all over Twitter?
She does seem to be overly self impressed. Like a child making it’s first poo on the potty. Makes me wonder if there is some genetic flaw in the Trump lineage that prevents maturity into adulthood.
I wish it were that child-like and harmless, but it’s not. She’s a shameless criminal just like her father and brothers, and probably a narcissist like him too. She’s conceited and self-admiring, sure, but she’s much more and worse than that. She plans to be a big noise in politics and grifting, and this is part of the plan, as well as mere rich twerp showing off.
Definitely. And she’s playing her pretty-little-princess persona to the hilt, with that in mind, but she’s just a younger version of her father. And dumbass GOP men will eat that up, and she knows it.
To be fair, pretty little princess is absolutely all she’s got.
I think ‘vacuous little princess’ would be a better description. Her face, and, worse, her voice (I tend to judge people by their voices rather than their appearance) – there is nothing there.
One more reason to stay away from Twitter.
