That’s the thing, tigger. If anyone said J.K. Rowling said women are women, and it’s awful and hateful and we want her punished, how many people could be convinced to dog-pile? But just scream “Transphobia!” and the woke brigade charges into action. And should they ever find out what she really said, and realize it is neither hateful nor untrue, they may already be so invested they won’t be able to admit. For some of them, hiding behind nyms, they may be able to change their nym and their mind without embarrassment, but others won’t find it so easy, so they will just keep baying for blood until they have scorched the earth so badly there is no repair, or until they drive off everyone around them, whichever comes first. Hopefully the latter.
I have to say it’s pretty damned clever… let’s hope it works out as well for them as it has for the evangelicals in the end (but a shorter period, obviously).
The well has already been poisoned, these ingrates have attacked JKR without even knowing what her position is, which she (in her own defense, unfortunately) felt compelled to outline in an essay on her website. I scoured the web looking for anything she said that could remotely be considered hateful or phobic, and couldn’t find a thing. Some of these people owe their careers to her, and should have at least tried to understand what she did or didn’t say before allying with the ever-so-fashionable, nasty, TRA know-nothings. It’s disgusting how lazy some of these attackers are, they don’t even find the time to understand someone’s nuanced opinion before dragging them all over the putrid social media landscape. It’s a shame, the principle of charitable reading has been all but lost. I am constantly amazed at how many stupid assholes there are in the world.
Someday I’ll tell you about the summer of 2015 around these parts…Just kidding, no I won’t, but it was all about “fuck your nuanced opinion u r TERF scum.”
I’ve seen some of the remaining bits and gathered a little from some of the current discussion, but I missed a lot in the past 15 years or so. There have always been trolls, flame wars, and nastiness online, but it used to be, as I recall, limited to more remote areas of the web. You had to look for it or stumble on it. Now it seems the worst of it is everywhere, the media reports on it, and it has taken over, everyone is swimming in it. From what I saw, the attack on you was unfair and I know I would have become defensive on your behalf, but it sure looks like a losing battle sometimes, there are so many of them. A bunch of cultish, herd mentality types who couldn’t reason their way out of a wet paper sack.
Well-poisoning for the well-intentioned who might not know what actually has been happening.
