Grown ass man claims remorse
Another Trump Derangement Syndrome incident Monday:
A 60-year-old man has been arrested in Maryland following allegations that he assaulted a group of three young adults who were hanging flyers in support of George Floyd and an end to racial injustice.
The confrontation drew widespread outrage when video of the encounter was posted online. Authorities with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police said Friday that Anthony Brennan III of Kensingston, Md., has been charged with second-degree assault in relation to the Monday incident.
…
Police say the incident occurred along the Capital Crescent Trail, which runs from the Georgetown neighborhood in Washington, D.C. through Bethesda, Md., a nearby affluent suburb.
Authorities in Maryland began asking for help identifying the cyclist on Tuesday, leading to hundreds of tips.
Brennan has since expressed remorse for the attack through his attorneys, according to media reports. The website DCist reports that Brennan says he is “sick with remorse for the pain and fear I caused the victims.”
Not sure I believe the remorse, but anyway – the Trump poison spreads day in and day out. Princess Ivanka should dedicate herself to fixing that problem instead of giving vacuous pep talks while impersonating a dress dummy.
Be best!
I’m sure that Anthony Brennan III is absolutely sick with remorse, that he has been caught and arrested, rather than showered with praise for his righteousness. I’m also sure that Anthony Brennan III lawyer advised him to express those exact words of remorse directed towards the victims of his felonious and totally unacceptable conduct.
Incidentally, does anyone know anything about Anthony Brennan III?
He’s the son of Anthony Brennan II and grandson of Anthony Brennan. Don’t know if that helps, mind. :-))
“Jr.” implies a direct descendant but “II” and “III” do not (could be nephews, etc.). They’re usually direct descendants, but not always.
(I don’t want to besmirch the wrong grandfather.)
I guess it’s good not to escalate, but I’m kind of surprised the person recording the video, who sounds like an adult male, protested but simply continued recording as another adult male got physical with children. I guess it worked out in the end since they were able to apprehend this idiot.
Can anyone even attempt to explain to me why numbering people is a thing (outside of royalty)?
Anyway, imagine what it’s like inside the head of a person who is out on his bike and sees some young people with flyers expressing their feelings about cops killing an unarmed man for no reason at all, and who is so outraged by this that he has to get off his bike and threaten said young people and snatch the flyers off them. It’s utterly unhinged. I wonder if he’s well-known for being an arse, or if this is a total surprise to his friends and family.
I think the numbering thing is an affectation of the New Rich putting on airs as pseudo-nobs… the Wedgwood family is a particularly good example of the practice going to Josiah V (I think) at least.
‘…three young adults…’? If you watch the clip its obvious that ‘little girl’ is the appropriate descriptor. Mr III looks to be a foot taller than the child he’s intimidating.
Catwhisperer, BKiSA, it isn’t the New Rich alone that do it. I know a great many working class that are numbered. It really comes down to the importance of the male heir to some people, so they name them after themselves; if they are a Jr., than III is the next step. It may be putting on airs for some of the working class, of course, but a lot of it is about family names. It’s sort of a macho “See my son…my son” thing among the people I know.
In sort of related news, we are having a BLM protest in our town today, and the police chief has announced he is okay with the protest, but if he sees even a single sign critical of the police, he will begin cracking heads. Talk about fascism! Or a police state…In a democracy, you must be allowed to criticize power.
Skeletor @ 4 – huh? That’s not right. The IIIs and IVs are for the precious patriarchal sons, not nephews. Kings are the exception to that, i.e. the UK’s George V was neither the son nor the direct descendant of George IV, but commoners can’t mess with the order that way.
I suppose there is some informal tradition of having namesakes, not, as Ikn explained, reserved for the wealthy or titled. I don’t use my suffix anymore, my grandfather and father being dead these 30 some years. Where I’m from it wasn’t at all uncommon to see many “Jr.” namesakes, but III and IV were pretty unusual and I tended not to use mine unless legally necessary. I noticed when I was young that some people would have weird reactions to find out I’m a “third”, so it became strangely embarrassing to me and I avoided using it. I think it felt pretentious back then, but now I just don’t use it out of habit.
Iknklast @8, Greg Doucette and many others have been documenting over the last few days that the Police now appear to be specifically targeting people because they are filming or because they are holding signs that say rude things about police or Trump.
They have also been using overwhelming force to go and arrest people they identified from social media posts as having attended protests – even where no clear crime exists. One example used was a woman who had a cartoon on one of his media accounts showing a Star Wars type vehicle with a dent in the front. Scrawled across the vehicle is the slogan ACAB. The caption reads ‘This machine kills fascists’.
This was used as evidence in the search warrant that she might try to run cops over…
Rob @11:
Yep, there’s a lot of that type of thing about. It’s one of the motivations behind protests against certain types of mass surveillance – such as automatic face recognition – that the UK police are so keen on. It’s one thing (although arguably still oppressive) to have CCTV cameras that are used to solve crimes after the fact and quite another to exclude people from public spaces or protests because of their algorithmically-determined perceived views or associations.
Some of my work on privacy and civil disobedience has been in this area and my worst predictions over the last decade or two are becoming routine practice.
Latsot, do you have links to any of your papers or writings that are not behind pay walls? If you don’t want to out yourself, maybe our gracious host could act as an intermediary?
As an aside, I see that there are now at least 8 people in the US who have lost eyes as a result of being shot directly in the eye with rubber bullets at close range. Eight! As one commentator put it – one more and they can have a softball team, just not a very good one obviously. That tally doesn’t include those who have been shot in the throat or other parts of the head, some of whom have been badly hurt and at least one permanently brain damaged.
Returning to the facial recognition thing, from what I understand the main private vendor of this system has been accused of scraping photos and identities from social media and other websites and there match rates are really quite bad. Amazing that police and government agencies want to pay money for the service anyway.
