She’s Black, she’s Muslim, she’s non-binary, and she’s millennial. So many boxes checked. And despite being not-a-woman, she wears hijab; so empowering.
Look, honestly, I looked at her policy set and I’ll take the win.
I’m opposed to identity politics in general. The central plank to the ANC’s government has been transformation, which identity politics driven, and the result has been a complete disaster. All of our state owned enterprises are corrupt, our healthcare was destroyed by “African solutions to African problems”.
When you focus on identity, you don’t focus on performance. It also allows to bullshit to fly that otherwise wouldn’t, look at the professor who celebrated the death of a child while pretending to be black, that’s identity politics in operation. It operates as a license to do shit that shouldn’t be done.
Now the thing is, it cuts both ways. I mean, I find the tweet vacuous, but at the end of the day this is someone who supports a lot of good stuff. Stuff like paid leave, like healthcare, like supporting teachers – I’m not going to be upset that she won because a tweet decided to focus on something I find pretty irrelevant.

Non-binary in a hijab – how does that work exactly???
My exact thoughts when I saw that in FiveThirtyEight’s feed “Speaking of women…”
My response, “Yes, why bother speaking of them at all?”
Ug…
She’s a ‘womxyn’, therefore ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Now I know you read J&M, Ophelia. Mo pulls it off with aplomb :-)
