Angry man interrupts to ask
Morgane Oger doing what he does, again.
Dude trying to get a big city library to suppress some women for him.
It’s not a “thesis” or a “core thesis.” It’s just reality. Men are not women. Men who dislike being men and would rather be women are still men. Men like Morgane Oger have no business trying to force women to stop saying men are not women.
Nobody seems to be buying his claims though.
The religious right should have tried this. “Richard Dawkins’ [or whoever is being invited to speak] core thesis is that we are not creations of God but the result of natural processes. This is unsupported by Canadian values.”
Ah, those time-honored Canadian values handed down from their grandfathers’ grandfathers: women are people who say they are.
That swap really gives up the game, doesn’t it? That is exactly the sort of thing that the religious have said of evolution and atheism. It was a bad argument then; it’s a bad argument now.
Not to mention that, even if you grant Oger’s premise that “trans women are women” is a Canadian value, people are allowed to say things that are “unsupported by Canadian values.” That would be the main mechanism by which Canadian values have changed (one hopes, improved) over times. I think even Oger would have to admit that “trans women are women” was not always a Canadian value — if it is indeed a Canadian value currently, it only became so because people advocated for it, and at the time they did so, they were speaking contrary to then-current Canadian values.
Also, one “Canadian value” is free speech, much as Americans like to think they patented it. Canada does allow for restriction of “hate speech,” but that phrase does not mean “speech which Morgane Oger hates to hear.”
“Expression exposing vulnerable groups to detestation and vilification [which is prohibited] goes far beyond merely discrediting, humiliating or offending the victims.” Saskatchewan (Human Rights Commission) v. Whatcott, 2013 SCC 11, [2013] 1 SCR 467, at para. 41.
Meanwhile, Yaniv has filed another BCHRT complaint against another salon.
…and as seen on CBC news, Oger (that’s how their name is pronounced? I always just read it “ogre” in my head…) objects to Yaniv’s tactics as detrimental.
I… er… um… yeah.
