A series of baseless claims
Giuliani is earning the desired 2 20k per diem by lying in court:
Rudy Giuliani launched into a series of baseless claims about the election during an appearance on behalf of the Trump campaign in federal court on Tuesday, seeking to block Pennsylvania from certifying its election results.
Giuliani, who requested to appear on behalf of Trump this morning, alleged there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.
That’s false; there isn’t a single state election official in the country who has seen widespread irregularities. The Department of Homeland Security described the 2020 election as “the most secure in American history.”
Weird that this is how he wants to tie the bow on his career.
It’s like somehow they’ve all been infected with some sort of Trump virus. It makes them trash their career willingly to feed Trump’s ego. Like that barnacle that parasitizes crabs so they tend the barnacle as lovingly as they do their own offspring. It’s weird. It’s like they can’t wait to throw their own life in the crapper just to be in good with him.
2k per diem? Has he had a 90% pay cut already?
I recently read a biography of Thomas Cromwell, which gave a good picture of Henry VIII’s court. A load of clever, shrewd, astute men would chuck every principle in order to advance in Henry’s favour, though there was a 50% chance they’d end up on the scaffold or hanged, drawn and quartered. It’s the lure of power, even when the power is waning.
AoS – argh, typo! Or perhaps inability to believe.
It’s the cost sunk bias so deep it has become an affirming aspect to his (their) identities. To change his (their) mind(s) is to commit suicide.
zubanel, are you saying it’s not worth the reversal of a Custer decision? ;-)
Got to be the powerful animal magnetism of Trump’s personality, I’d say. His faithful disciples will cheerfully throw themselves under a passing train for him. Savour this fleeting moment. His like we may never see again.
Omar:
On the other hand, it never pays to under-estimate the stupidity of people. This election was far too close to allow for complacency. Another Trump – albeit one more discreet in his lawlessness and greed – will always be around the corner.
It wasn’t that close, Biden’s probably going to win by four or five points, but the stupid and evil are more advantageously distributed. The fact that Democrats need to win the popular vote by four or five points just to squeak by in the EC is the only reason it seems close.
Still the fact that 74 million Americans at least don’t find Trump deal-breaking (I sincerely doubt he has that many true believers) is appalling.
I’ve been following various live-tweets of today’s hearing. (Popehat and Adam Klasfeld, mostly.) Rudy is… not doing well. And I try to make allowances for other lawyers having difference styles, and client goals that I may not know about, and it’s always easier from the sidelines, and I’ve had the shit kicked out of me in court when I was arguing a losing side, but… yeah, this is not professional representation at any price, let alone $20K a day.
I just saw a tweet in which Rudy didn’t know what “opacity” meant and guessed a meaning the opposite of the actual one.
I didn’t see that one, but I saw the bit about him not understanding what “strict scrutiny” means in an equal protection case.
I struggle to come up with an appropriate analogy. This was not an obscure or off-the-wall question. It’s pretty much the first thing you’d ask yourself after deciding you’re bringing an EP claim.
But of course, Rudy wasn’t there to win the motion. He was there to conduct a glorified press conference.
I know that Rudi and all the Trump lawyers across the country are merely playing to the gallery, so to speak, but it appears that what they are really doing is demonstrating that four years of stacking the courts isn’t paying off at all the way Trump expected. What’s the point of being president if you can’t even have all the judges on your side? He must be near meltdown now, what with all those ungrateful, disloyal bastards not agreeing that what Donnie wants Donnie gets.
I’m not even a lawyer, and I’m familiar with the idea of strict scrutiny. Surely Guiliani is just playing dumb?
Very weird, indeed. Remember when he was admired and lauded as “America’s Mayor”? Now he’s just a sniveling little toothy rat, universally despised. I guess $20,000/day can buy a lot of comfort food, though. Who needs self respect when you can shovel endless amounts of Ben & Jerry’s into your face? Not rat-faced Rudy.
