A woman I know was asking me recently why we are all so worried about a virus that’s been around for so long, and we don’t have problems with. I explained to her about the “novel” part of coronavirus, and mutations, and other sciency stuff. I said it was killing people. She said they were all old and had other illnesses, so why did we think it was coronavirus? And she acted like if people were sick already (never mind that asthma can strike very young people, and it is not a mark of being a bad person) it didn’t matter if they died, because they were practically dead.
I don’t think she took in what I said. She said we obviously have different sources, and asked what sources I use. I mentioned the scientific sources, and she dismissed them. Oh, you can’t trust them, she told me. She said we apparently have different opinions, and left it like that. She did wear her mask because her boss required it, so at least that was good.
When people can believe that a deadly virus is just a matter of opinion…that’s some weapons grade denialism.
