When he said “pay for it” he obviously didn’t mean “pay for it”
This one will lose him some MAGA fans, because he’s playing them for suckers.
President Donald Trump claimed Thursday that his oft-made 2016 campaign promise that he would build a wall and Mexico would pay for it didn’t mean it would be a direct payment, despite outlining just that scenario during his campaign.
Yeah, they’re not going to like that, because he said it to them and they know that and nobody likes being played for a sucker.
“When during the campaign, I would say ‘Mexico is going to pay for it,’ obviously, I never said this, and I never meant they’re gonna write out a check, I said they’re going to pay for it. They are,” he said as he prepared to depart the White House for the southern border.
We’re not that stupid, Don. We’re not your kids.
But in April 2016, Trump’s campaign outlined the steps he would take to compel Mexico to pay the US “$5-10 billion” to fund a border wall — a plan that relies largely on threatening to bar undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States from wiring money to relatives in Mexico.
“It’s an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year,” the memo said.
Don’t insult us, Don. Nobody likes being insulted that way.
I wish I could share your optimism, but those MAGA folks seem to be able to readjust their expectations constantly. They seem to be more about hating people who don’t agree with them (especially those that don’t look like them) than about consistent policy and plans.
“The glory which is built upon a lie soon becomes a most unpleasant incumbrance. … How easy it is to make people believe a lie, and how hard it is to undo that work again!” – Mark Twain, autobiography.
How many of Trump’s MAGA crowd already know that he can’t/won’t actually do what he said he could/would? All those factory jobs he’s going to bring back are long gone. A quiet look at the tags of Trump-branded merchandise will show anyone how seriously he takes “Made in the USA” as a personal goal. As far as I can tell they LOVE the lies because they trigger Libs, and that’s enough for them. They would have to undergo rehabilitation after undergoing immediate , radical Foxectomies, and that sort of work takes more time than they’ve got and more effort than effort than they would want to put into the exercise.
His supporters can’t or don’t want to distinguish “telling it like it is” from “whatever happens to be passing through his tiny mind at this very moment,” even when the latter contradicts something he uttered in the previous sentence. If they can handle the contradictions inherent in voting for someone manifestly unfit for the job he now holds, if they can handle being governed by a sleazy, know nothing, con-man, racist serial adulterer labouring under the combined burdens of delusions of competence and grandeur, then they’ll be just fine with whatever rationalization he spits out of his mouth.
You forgot lazy.
Many Trump voters scream loudly and long about government employees “leaning on their shovels” (Never mind that those using shovels to lean on are doing some of the worst back-breaking work out there) but they don’t mind that their President does no work at all. Twitter rages are not work, they are Trump’s entertainment…and that of millions of Trump supporters. They elected him to hate, and he is hating. They elected him to break things, and he is breaking things. They elected him to entertain them, and he is entertaining them.
And you’re right, it’s all about “triggering libs”. A really stupid way to run a country, but what the hell? It’s what they wanted. Pity the rest of us (libs or not).
His greatest virtue considering he is the exemplar of someone who is Worse than useless
A concept I wish had greater traction.
His supporters are already seamlessly switching to the new story, something like “the renegotiated trade deal generates new profit from Mexico! The profit pays for the wall!” never minding the fact that the profit is generated by US businesses, and only enters government hands as taxes levied on those businesses and US employees. Which makes it US money.
The usual response to having that pointed out runs something like “liberals cucks like you can’t admit Trump is winning! Trump derangement syndrome!” Total non-sequitur, but then, they’re Trump voters.
Holms, the thing with that scenario is that a lot of US businesses are given so many tax breaks, many of them pay little to no taxes at all. So the Trump supporter is doubly ignorant.
