They’re doing it as we sit here
Okaaay so that’s noteworthy.

“It wasn’t a single attempt. They’re doing it as we sit here. And they expect to do it during the next campaign.”https://t.co/m9KGQtGMJ7 pic.twitter.com/s1Aa1nyLsU

And it could work! Again! We could be stuck with this malevolent ignorant sack of shit for another four years thanks to Putin!
In fact, I suspect it’s very likely. Especially since the pundits (and many Democrats) are tearing the Democratic candidates apart constantly. This one can’t beat Trump. That one is too radical. That one is too conservative. This one can’t keep his hands off the women (okay, that’s a valid complaint). She is too shrill. He is too shallow. She is too…oops, let’s not say that, let’s imply it…not white. He is too congenial. She isn’t congenial enough. Smile more. Shake more hands. Stop talking about policy. Talk about policy more. What in the world is she thinking wearing that? How many children does she have? Is he a father? Oh, dear, she’s a grandmother. Too old. Too young. Too fat. Too thin. Too smart. Too dumb.
While I think there are legitimate assessments and analyses made of the candidates, the type of assessments we are getting don’t help. They play into the Trump persona, feed him lines to use as insults, and fail to inspire the voters to rally for the eventual nominee, which will be the first choice of only a fraction of the party. And the expectation of perfection makes it worse.
And all of the hearings only energize the Republicans further. We must keep a Democrat from taking the White House. That is their rallying cry, and they will answer.
Iknklast, I, too, am apprehensive.
Ironically, one thing that gives me hope is…Trump’s win. He looked so bad going into the general election. He was being mocked left and right (politically and metaphorically). His convention was filled with speeches from family and business associates because mainstream Republicans didn’t want to touch him. One of the few that did give a speech was Ted Cruz…who ended it by pointedly not endorsing Trump. There was talk of him being such a bad candidate that Republicans were looking for ways to get him off the ballot.
And yet he won.
I think by election day all this intraparty squabbling is very likely to have been forgotten. The Democrats had a close primary that left a lot of wounded feelings last time. I think it’s unlikely to be anywhere close to that this time. Democratic voters also didn’t think Trump had a chance so quite a few of them decided to be cute and cast protest votes for Jill Stein or stay home, figuring it wouldn’t change the result but they could send a message to Hillary that they were mad that she was mean to Bernie or whatever. That’s unlikely to happen again.
Trump’s also tanking in polls of the “blue wall” states that collapsed for Hillary and gave him the win last time.
But, yeah, he could still win. The economic indicators are mostly good and the Democrats are taking some very unpopular positions, so they could lose enough swing voters to drop the election.
Well we can blame Putin for the Russian part in the election but let’s not underestimate the debased, craven and immature values of a large section of the US population. Credit where credit is due.
Skeletor, you may give the Democratic voters more credit than is due. I’ve seen many an election tank because the Democrats demanded perfection or because they demonstrated apathy. Apathy is 100% inappropriate right now, but I’m hearing a lot of it among my friends on the left. My friends on the right, on the other hand, are convinced that the “liberals” are destroying them and their country (in spite of the fact that the “liberals” have not been in charge) and are agitating to continue Trump because he hates everyone they hate.
