I take it that’s 200 meters? And the times are in seconds?
In that kind of race, if you beat your opponent by half a second, you’re dominating them. A full second faster is crushing. Anything more than that is eyebrow raising.
Fourth place and up are tightly grouped, with less than a second between four and eight. Look how close second and third place (13.088 and 13.140) are to each other. Second place beats fourth by 1.006, which, as I said, is a truly dominating performance. Third was nearly as good, off by 0.052. It’s too bad those efforts were wasted.
McKinnon’s 11.844 beats second place by 1.244 seconds. As the kids might say: what is this I can’t even
By 1.244 seconds over second place, easily the largest split in the event. I guess it’s just a coincidence that this makes McKinnon about 10% faster than the fasted actual female in the league, exactly in line with the lead male athletes have over female.
I guess he trains that much harder than those lazy women?
I haven’t found the results yet, but the event was listed as being open to men and FTW riders. FTW meaning Femme, Trans and Women. I did a quick search and there are quite a few FTW riding groups, where the stated ethos is to have a group where the needs of FTW riders can be centred, free of male influence. Dammit, my irony meter is acting all erratic again.
“Femme?” I’m not familiar with the term; dictionary says it’s a “ lesbian whose appearance and behavior are seen as traditionally feminine.” But that can’t be right — can it? A bike race restricted to women, men who consider themselves women, and feminine lesbians?
No, I’m obviously missing something in the definition.
Note the twitter name of McK’s trainer…..Schwinnatallcosts. Yep, even if it means pretending to be a woman, one must win at all costs. Pathetic really, and would be laughable were it not pushing actual women out.
AoS, that’s Anna Schwinn. I believe she is a descendant of the founder of Schwinn bicycles. So just an unfortunate association with our view of McKinnon’s desire to win at all costs in this case.
I showed the results and the photo of McKinnon to my partner. Like many serious multi sport athletes, she is obsessive about times and splits ranked by age and sex. She just said ‘wow’. Her view – no way any woman she knew would be able to compete against the evident power Mckiinon’s frame provides her. She doesn’t want to prevent trans women from competing, but feels that they should be ranked either in their own category, or against their natal sex. She also feels badly for women and girls displaced from their places and potential scholarships by men competing as women. She said if she competed in events won by the likes of McKinnon, she would compare her time against the highest ranked natal woman, not the ‘winner’.
I’m hoping that some day (in the not too-distant future) this “record” is removed, or followed by an asterisk linking to an explanatory footnote, ruefully recounting how this aberration occurred at a time when cycling authorities were temporarily out of their minds.
This is appalling but you all know that. What you didn’t know is that my dog has got the same stuffed fox toy. I say the same, he’s chewed the nose off his one.
Why are cis women freaked out with competing with trans women??? I’ve never had a cis guy come up to be and say well you won because you were afab and I can’t compete against you.
How bout you were beat because @rachelvmckinnon was just better than you in this particular race. Get over it Evie. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. But being an asshole the entire time just looks ugly.
Wat. Couldn’t be that it isn’t being transgender that represents an advantage, but instead being male. Nope. Couldn’t be that.
Nullius, I tried to make that point in a thread that went to over 200 comments, to no avail. They just respond, time and time again, with ‘it’s because you hate trans people!’ and then ‘but wait! no pushback against trans men means you must hate trans women specifically!’
They don’t notice that the reason there is no pushback against trans men is that there is not a sport were being say, small and flexible gives an advantage over being tall, strong, and fast. It’s almost as if only things that require strength have been developed into sports… funny, that.
Mostly true, but there are events like rhythm gymnastics – ribbon, ball, hoop etc. – and synchronised swimming, which are heavily based on artistry, coordination, and flexibility rather than athleticism. Strangely, there is no push from trans women to enter those events…
Holms, and there is being a jockey, where being a transman could have an advantage.
Of course, one difference on that is that men have dominated the jockey world forever anyway, so there is no need to set up a special event for them so they can enjoy with some chance of winning. They simply shut women out, as they did with so many other sports. Now women are insisting on being included, as with other sports.
Transmen could have an advantage there, but I haven’t hear anything that suggests such a thing is happening. And I’m not sure it would be a disaster since, as indicated, men pushed women out for so long in order to continue dominating. It’s time for them to move aside.
Ah, yes rhythm gymnastics. Good point. Special lady sports, all about the artistry and coordination and flexibility, and what do you know? No men’s events. Of course the special feature of gymnastics is that the events are not just divided by sex (for now…), but the routines are different, with masculine manly men performing mind-boggling feats of strength and flexibility, whilst tiny little girly-girls fly around doing equally astonishing things, but with added curtsying and a strained grin plastered across their faces. The men don’t look like they’ve ever missed a meal, the women look like they need a damn sandwich, now.

I’ll be curious to see the results for the men’s 200 event.

Also, here’s an academic paper saying the same thing:

The meaning of “femme” has expanded to the point of uselessness lately. It can also apply to gay men and – of course – to men who “identify as” women.

Catwhisperer, I’ve had to stop giving my dog stuffed animal toys; he does…..things….to them that no stuffed toy should have to endure!
Ha! I assume it’s the same thing my dog does to his bed…
From a comment on a podium shot of McKinnon:

And then the cycle repeats.
