Someone doesn’t know what hot pink looks like…
I prefer my version:
Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker despite being so disliked that Dems were sure to dump her as Speaker, having been elected after all by a Democratic House majority that was never supposed to happen because Pelosi was so disliked. The unpopular shrill partisan shrew Pelosi replaces dreamy humble policy wonk Paul Ryan, whose favorable/unfavorable ratings of approximately 10/70 are misleading because a lot of that 10 percent are op-ed writers or editorial board members or other people who count.
But I guess that’s more than 280 characters. Damn.
She was elected speaker because there wasn’t a better choice. I would’ve liked someone much younger myself, but that person doesn’t exist.
Yeah, noting the dress color is stupid.
“The gavel he never sought to wield” is also stupid. Ryan was such a transparent phony and the media never seemed to catch on.
Also, Blood Knight, your claim that people much younger people than Pelosi don’t exist seems dubious at best.
They do exist… But they’re not qualified and generally don’t want to do the job. Being Speaker *SUCKS*…
I rather like her age. Nice to see an older woman with power and who’s not invisible to our culture.
Yeah, the Speaker’s job isn’t to be dynamic and exciting and bipartisan and popular with average Americans. The Speaker’s job is to wrangle votes by twisting arms when needed and letting members vote against when they’re not, managing the legislative agenda effectively, etc. Pelosi is by all accounts good at those things.
@Screechy Monkey:
Indeed… There was no better candidate than Pelosi at that; I opted not to harangue my representative for that reason.
There are over 200 Democrats in the House. Surely there were 10 or 20 who were younger, qualified, and wanted the job. Most of them were too terrified of Pelosi to throw their hat in the ring. If she wanted the job — and she did — opposing her was a bad career move.
Note this isn’t a knock on Pelosi. This ferociousness is what made her so effective.
The problem is if she becomes less effective at her job (even for unfair reasons) but is still powerful enough to hold onto it. I too would have liked to see someone new (not necessarily young) and think this may be a missed opportunity. But she’ll probably be fine, especially running opposition to Trump. I am glad she agreed to term limits so she has 2-4 years left.
But, who knows, maybe when she’s gone we’ll have the Democratic equivalent of Paul Ryan and be pining for the good old days…
Bingo. Why is it whenever a woman over 50 (I realize she’s quite a bit over 50) gets a position doing anything, someone always says “I wish it was someone younger”? I don’t remember hearing anyone harangue Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump about their age during the election, but everyone was on about Clinton’s age. She was younger than both of them.
I for one am thrilled to see a strong, powerful, older woman showing the world that women don’t quit functioning the moment their ovaries do.
To be fair (if you want to be) I wasn’t a huge fan of Bernie’s age either.
Really what I want is to see much stronger representation of my generation in government. The Dems need new blood, new faces, and it looks like the new House has a lot of that going on.
This is what I see all the time from this side of the pond. I’m not singling out the commentators at this blog; it is everywhere, but this is a good example.
Ophelia pointed out an outrageously obvious example of sexism in a tweet which seems to have gone entirely unnoticed by virtually everyone else; read tweets by @manwhohasitall (https://twitter.com/manwhohasitall) for a highly amusing, if somewhat despair-inducing, account of how just damn normal it is.
The first comment says nothing about the sexism but criticises the twit’s choice of words to describe the dress colour (not this again? it was blue!).
And then a discussion ensues – not about the condescending, demeaning, outrageously sexist tweet, but about how people would have preferred a different candidate.
I noticed that not one person came up with an actual name, or even suggested a group of people from which such a unicorn candidate could have been chosen. No. Despite Ophelia pointing out to us time and time again that people who largely support the Democratic Party of the US nevertheless can never, somehow, bring themselves to support a particular Democratic candidate, and that perhaps people could stop doing that, here you are, doing it again!
It is happening everywhere, all the damn time.
“Why do the GOP keep getting their tall poppies elected?! We obviously need tall poppies in our party!”
Later…
“Look at that tall poppy! What gives her the right to be taller than the rest of us?” *Chop*
During the last election cycle, it seemed that – for just a few weeks – Democrats had finally stopped cutting one another down to size, and they managed to elect a majority to Congress. How wonderful! Many more women! Racially diverse!
But it was only a temporary truce; as soon as the election was over, and even before the candidates had taken their seats, the whole nasty back-biting had started up again. Nancy Pelosi? Too old, too much experience. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? Too young, not enough experience. All the rest? Wrong dress, wrong attitude, not PC enough, too PC, not aggressive enough, too aggressive, appealing to the same old people, not appealing to the right people, appealing to the wrong people…
This is why women can’t win. Because no-one can see the sexism because it is the water you are swimming in. It is so normalised that everyone is unaware that they are doing it.
Please read Man Who Has It All – and think.
Thank you, iknklast for showing how it should be done.
Your country is fortunate to have Pelosi; it would be nice if Democrats could act like they were pleased.
Mad props at #tiggerthewing
I’d like to know how Jordan “Beef” Peterson explains this. I bet lobsters don’t issue tweets like that.
