Manchester United do have a knack of finding the best goalkeepers (and the occasional lemon; Gary Bailey is one that leaps to mind), from Alex Stepney to Peter Schmeichel (probably the best ever), Fabien Barthez and now de Gea, who was shaky to begin with but has developed into one of the current best in the world.
Whilst luck may seem to play a part, a ‘keeper makes their own luck through clever positioning, always watching the ball rather than the player, and by being aware of who is where. Being able to command their own area and have an imposing presence is also important.
I was a huge football fan, and even though I have lost a lot of interest in the game I will always be a United supporter.
I know very little about soccer, but in hockey, goaltending is largely about positioning. In fact, a lot of the visually dazzling acrobatic highlight reel saves are a goaltender bailing himself out of a mistake — which, to be fair, is also a useful skill for a goaltender, just not as important as “making fewer mistakes.” So the comments above ring true to me.
My knowledge of soccer doesn’t go much beyond what I’ve been at my SO’s granddaughter’s games–but that was amazing. But, off-topic, I have to ask what language is the announcer speaking? Ain’t East Asian or Indo-European.
UNreal. A bit of luck…but mostly amazing skill. That was pleasant to watch.
One tweeter said it’s not as much luck as it may seem: knowing where to be is part of the skill.

Amazing. I’m looking forward to De Gea and IƱaki Williams leading Spain to a few more European and World Cup victories.
