In recent years, voices on the far right have drawn on the Crusades to frame the current political climate as a “clash of civilizations” between Christianity and Islam. The war cry of the Christian crusaders, “Deus vult,” has been used to vandalize mosques in Europe and America. The alt-right and neo-Nazis at the rally Charlottesville also drew on the imagery of the Holy Roman Empire and the Knights Templar, employing helmets and shields adorned with imagery from medieval Christianity.
And the co-optation of the Coexist bumper sticker…
These people are sick. And people that think just like him are living in my neighborhood. At least with ones like this one, you know who he is and can avoid him. Around here, they tend not to bumper sticker their car very much, so you have to wait for them to act out to find out who to avoid.
According to a little googling, the “Deus Vult” slogan puts him well out in nasty-land.
