These 11 wonderful people
These 11 wonderful people were at Tree of Life Synagogue. I imagine they were holding prayer books singing Hebrew prayers Jews have loved for thousands of years. I’m sure many were wearing a Tallit, the Jewish Prayer Shawl. May They Rest In Peace. May Their Memory be a Bleasing. pic.twitter.com/wK0uxOwSSS

Those poor people. What a terrifying way to die. And for what? So that the President of the United States can get cheers at a rally, by lying about Jews, plus other Middle Easterners and starving refugees.
Another horrible, disgusting tragedy. Elderly people shot down while privately engaging in a peaceful ceremony. Another domestic terrorist act not recognised as such.
Obama wasn’t perfect and the precursers to Trump emerged on his watch. But this Obama quote should be repeated ad nauseum:
“Let’s be clear: At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries,”
When that reckoning with guns will come, i have no idea.
But i can at least imagine a post-Trump future in which the USA remembers that it’s a nation of immigrants and a melting pot and that the whole world is richer for that.
In a related note, I heard last night that the shooter will face stricter penalties for killing people while engaged in acts of worship. Say what? Why is engaging in acts of worship considered more of a protected activity than, say, going to the grocery store? Or a gay bar? Or a concert? And why didn’t I hear about this when the black church was shot up?
It is a tragedy, but let’s not pretend it would be less of a tragedy if it happened at, say, a community center or a government office, or anywhere else. Shooting someone in the bathroom should be considered as high a crime as shooting someone at prayer.
Unlike his boss, Mike Pence is a deeply religious man, so he wouldn’t insult the memory of the Jewish dead, would he?
Oh!
It was the Rep. candidate, Lena Epstein, who invited the cleric, but it was Pence who opened the rally and introduced Jacobs to lead the prayer, and Pence just has to know what Messianic Judaism is.
Well, a prayer’s not a prayer unless it has Jesus in it.
