Trump says he’ll never let the government re-open until he gets Wall, and that federal workers are telling him that’s what they want too.
“I think they understand what’s happening,” he said. “They want border security. The people of this country want border security.”
“It’s not a question of me,” he continued. “I would rather not be doing shutdowns. I’ve been at the White House. I love the White House, but I wasn’t able to be with my family. I thought it would be wrong for me to be with my family, my family is in Florida, Palm Beach, and I just didn’t want to go down and be there when other people are hurting.”
Hurting but wanting Wall just the same. They will loses their houses and starve before they give up on Wall!
Trump was presumably referring to his adult children; his wife, Melania Trump, returned to the White House on Monday to spend the holiday with her husband.
Trump said many federal workers have told him to hold out for wall funding, though the President didn’t provide names or positions of those workers.
“But many of those workers have said to me and communicated, stay out until you get the funding for the wall. These federal workers want the wall. The only one that doesn’t want the wall are the Democrats, because they don’t mind open borders, but open borders mean massive amounts of crime,” he said.
Hey I have an idea, instead of Wall we could just put up big signs saying “WE HATE BROWN PEOPLE SO STAY OUT” every few yards. It’s the same message for a fraction of the cost.
So who’s giving in first: Trump, enough Senate Republicans to override his veto, or the Democrats that want the government to work?
BKiSA, if history is any guide, probably the Democrats. They have notoriously not had a backbone. Then Trump gets to crow in victory and he has an effective, nasty tool that he will use again and again and again.
No way. If the current Congress was continuing in office, then maybe the Democrats would give ground, because the Republicans only need to pick off several Dem Senators. But now they’re going to need a resolution that Nancy Pelosi is willing to bring to the floor, and there’s just no way the Dems are going to set the precedent of getting rolled by Trump. Otherwise, what was the point in winning the House? Next time, Trump can just shut down the government until the Dems shut down the House investigations, defund the Mueller probe, fund the rest of the wall, etc.
Dems suck at politics, but they don’t suck that much.
I wish I could share your confidence, and I tell myself that a lot, but…the Dems had a super majority when Obama went into office, and they blew it. There was so much they could have done, but they kept looking over their shoulders in fear that someone might say something nasty about them on Fox News.
Of course, no matter what they do, someone is going to say something nasty about them on Fox News, but still they compromise away the farm by yielding to people who won’t compromise.
And don’t point Obamacare at me, because as far as I am concerned, Obamacare is a miserable compromise with the other side. I was once among those uninsured, and I would have cried to see Obamacare implemented at that time, because I couldn’t even afford the premium, and once I had paid that, there would be the co-pays. Many doctors were working with me at the time, allowing me to pay what I could when I could, but I still couldn’t afford health care. The current co-pay on my insurance would have been more than I could handle, and paying an insurance premium would have made it impossible for me to continue to pay for our housing. We would have been in the streets. So no, don’t tell me Obamacare was really something. And they had to build in exceptions for the state I live in to get Ben Nelson (D-NE) on board.
