Who needs schools when we have Fox News?
The Senate confirmed rich donor and ignoramus Betsy DeVos as education secretary this morning. Theocrat Mike Pence broke the tie.
For many in the education community, Ms. DeVos’s full-throated support for charter schools and vouchers — which allow students to use taxpayer dollars to pay tuition at private, religious and for-profit schools — is emblematic of a disconnection from the realities of the education system. Neither Ms. DeVos nor any of her children attended a public school.
…
David E. Kirkland, an education professor at New York University who has studied Ms. DeVos’s impact in Michigan, said he feared she could badly hurt public education across the country and pull resources out of schools in need of federal funding. “Her extensive conflicts of interest and record of diverting money away from vulnerable students and into the pockets of the rich make DeVos completely unfit for the position she was just confirmed to,” he said.
Ms. DeVos has focused on expanding parental choice in education and embracing charter schools, but also on vouchers. Her ideology was a good fit for the education platform that Mr. Trump put forward during the campaign, which called for a $20 billion voucher initiative aimed at low-income children.
But freeing such an enormous sum would most likely require the reallocation of existing federal education money, as well as a realignment of congressional priorities.
Oh well, it’s only education.
Well, at least we can take comfort in the fact that she was supported by the vast majority of the Senate in a landslide of epic proportions, and thus has a mandate for dismantling and defunding public schools. Or so I hear.
I know that, no matter who the nominee might have been, I would disagree with their ideology and positions on public schools, vouchers, etc. But would it have been such a loss of face for some “brave Republicans” to have acknowledged the baldly obvious fact that DeVos had no discernible qualifications? It truly does seem to be more about winning than anything else; that, and codifying the principle that $200M should be able to buy you a cabinet seat, regardless of qualifications.
It’ll be good fodder for Senate attack ads in two years… They pissed off a lot of people by ignoring the wishes of their constituents.
You’d think they could’ve just tried again with someone who has an education background *and* wants to gut public schools.
Helicam, I’m sure that the 50% who didn’t vote to confirm Trump’s choice is just FAKE NEWS. Sad.
And those Senators were probably casting illegal votes. After all, if they weren’t voting for Trump and his minions, they must be voting illegally, right?
Well, there is some truth to the stories that these things are rigged. Our honorable Senator Toomey has been inundated with letters, voicemail, and phone calls for the past 2 weeks. All of his offices have been virtually unreachable due to the volume of calls, many of them ardently opposing DeVos’s confirmation. Needless to say, this had no effect on the honorable gentleman’s vote, perhaps due to the $60K donation from DeVos. The idea that our senators represent their constituencies is generally a sick joke, as Toomey, among many others, has already been bought and paid for. Definitely rigged.
