The restoration
It’s just a proposed bill so far. Maybe it will be ignored or laughed at…or maybe not.
A proposed House Resolution would set the stage for the United States to remove itself from the United Nations.
The proposed “American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017” is sponsored by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL). It was introduced in the House on Jan. 3 and referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, according to the Congress website.
The bill proposes that the United States terminate its membership in the UN, that the UN removes its headquarters from the US, and that the US stops participating in the World Health Organization. Read the full bill here.
Murka First amirite?
Well, that will mean we will no longer have veto power over the UN….
Why don’t we just build the wall around the entire country? Keep everyone out…
Good grief. He’s even more deranged than our lot…
Interesting that they couch it in terms of ‘sovereignty’. That was one of the planks of the Leave campaign – taking back sovereignty. Not that we’d ever lost it, really (assuming that it’s actually a real thing). Seems to be one of the key things for isolationists to cling on to.
And, Graham, the US has never lost sovereignty. But that is a buzzword here, sovereignty, often used by southerners to explain why they had to fight the Civil War. In reality, sovereignty here often means the right to discriminate.
Playing in the coming years: China and Germany Save the World
Sovereignty is a favourite call of isolationists everywhere of all political persuasions. At its most benign it translates into ‘we don’t want those others in charge’. ‘Others’ may be anything from a neighbouring country to the UN depending on the issue at hand. At its less benign it’s southern US not wanting northern US or central not wanting coastal to dictate policy. At its least benign, as iknklast says, it’s all about discrimination. In fact I suspect even with the first example, what really concerns people who say this is that any outside party will treat them the way they do/would…
BKiSA, a colleague said to me a few weeks ago ‘who would have thought we’d be relying on a right-wing German Chancellor, or a communist premier to save us all from an American.’
On the other hand, Snopes tells us that this bill has been introduced at every new Congress for the past 20 years.
