I guess it’s nice that a philosopher has endorsed the idea that we shouldn’t tolerate intolerance, but also… I think it’s something even (kind) children get.
He did link to it from a footnote in his epic “So, about this Googler’s manifesto” takedown that was linked from, like, everywhere (including here) a couple of weeks ago, so I figure a few others probably caught it, but it’s probably worth re-linking here for those that missed it…
Unlimited tolerance can lead to the extinction of tolerance. Or not.
I can also let my cats poop on the floor. A cat’s got to poop, a hater has to hate. We just need the right size litter boxes. Ceiling Cat I find racists insecure and uneducated. I recommend church cafeterias for their forums; racism has always sat squarely with genocidal biblical values.
See also Tolerance is not a moral precept; it is a peace treaty by Yonatan Zunger.
Illustrated by a picture of and by a Degenderette holding a baseball bat. You do realize that the Degenderette’s targets are people like Ophelia and me, right?
I’m not. Do we limit Nazi’s free speech, as long as it doesn’t go beyond dog-whistly speech? I once fought with Ken “Popehat” White on this very blog over whether or not a popular web hosting service–whatever those are called–should deny their services to Daily Stormer type groups. (I thought they should deny them; White disagreed.)
I’m sure we all agree that we shouldn’t tolerate Nazi behavior. The question is, do we restrict their rights to freedom of speech, assembly, etc., in an attempt to keep their ideas from spreading and thus possibly gaining power? Do we let them have their blogs and their marches, as long as they behave themselves, and counter them with our own speech? Well, that’s tolerance…the thing whose limit we’re discussing.
That’s why I asked, where do we draw the line? I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s an easy call.
When and where do we draw the line, though? That’s the tricky part.
The other tricky part is what to do when the intolerant are in a position to make and decide the laws.
Well if enough of them get that much power, we’re screwed, obviously. That’s the point.
You two are kidding…
right?

An excellent piece by Yonatan Zunger, and a great title. Thank you.
Another book Republicans can be just about guaranteed not to know.

@Lady Mondegreen, I did not realise that; my apologies. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
I didn’t know it either. Never heard of them.
@Karellen and Ophelia, I heard about them here:
