Incidentally, in case someone was planning to dismiss McWhorter as a liberal academic — I don’t know how he describes his politics these days, but historically McWhorter has been a conservative, worked for conservative think tanks, etc.
I wish there was a bit more distinction made here between Trump’s informality and his reckless indifference to content: the normal, casual style versus the meaning and the truth of what he says. The informality and dinky vocabulary may be jarring out of a President but it’s plausibly just a matter of changing fashions or an idiosyncrasy. Running that mouth off with no interest in the consequences or truth of what comes out of it isn’t, cannot ever be, harmless.
Very glad I spent seven and a half minutes to watch that video. Watching two very intelligent and articulate people anaylse the speech of a very unintelligent and inarticulate person, who, extremely unfortunately, has a lot more power than them, was extremely satisfying.
Yes, what Screechy said; McWhorter’s team conservative. I’ve always liked his books while feeling faintly guilty about it, but hadn’t seen him in person until seeing him on I think Don Lemon’s show talking about Trump, and I was bowled over.
Very entertaining. “Not many people know that,” is Michael Caine’s catch phrase.
McWhorter is cool. Nothing funnier than restrained analysis of something bizarre. Him passing Trump through his linguistic filter is like Gulliver’s journey to Laputa.
Also what a pleasure to listen to Mr McWhorter’s own elegant speech. Good speaking – well phrased – intelligent – is as pleasing to the ears as good music, and please the brain as well. I suppose that would be off-putting to Trump supporters – too fancy pants. The sloppy stream of consciousness Trump employ sounds sincere, even if he’s lying through his teeth.
Right? It’s almost like a good stage performance or the like – kind of thrilling in that way. Just the way he said “Umhm and he learned nothing in them” cracked me up. Notice also it’s not conspicuously academic or de haut en bas – it’s quite colloquial. “The chief doesn’t just get up and run his mouth.”
