Not a fun game
So we’re playing “Let’s Relive the Cuban Missile Crisis!” these days. I’d so much rather not.
China has warned that “conflict could break out at any moment” as tension over North Korea increases.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi said if war occurred there could be no winner.
I wonder if possibly it was a mistake to elect a narcissistic ignorant bully president at this particular moment.
Adding to Chinese unease, President Donald Trump said on Thursday that “the problem of North Korea” would be “taken care of”.
“If China decides to help, that would be great. If not, we will solve the problem without them! U.S.A.”
That was a tweet. It wasn’t something he said in a press release or an address to the nation or even at a press conference. It was a tweet. I wonder if possibly it’s not ideal for the president to be threatening wars on Twitter.
In an interview with the Associated Press, North Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister Han Song Ryol accused the Trump administration of “becoming more vicious and more aggressive” in its policy towards the North.
An institute linked to the North Korean foreign ministry also warned that “thermo-nuclear war may break out any moment”.
Not something for North Korea to look forward to, I would think.
“Not something for North Korea to look forward to”
Ophelia, I don’t think that the South Koreans would be looking forward to a Second Korean War (plus nukes) either. Or China.
I’m puzzled as to what even the mighty US could do to degrade North Korea’s nuclear capacity without starting Armageddon. North Korea isn’t one of those ramshackle regimes such as Saddam’s Iraq.

Oh if only the movie War Games was a short You Tube clip instead of full feature length, maybe #FakePrez could let himself input some elucidation?
It’s… erm… gonna give the term ‘Twitter war’ a whole new meaning, anyway.
More seriously, saying what I figure everyone can see anyway, but, y’know, nukes in the picture, you need to say something or scream, so: the trouble with the guy–or I guess just two of several major problems with the guy– is this just _incredible_ hubris and incuriosity. From the moment the US became a nuclear armed power and the decision to launch or not got bound to the presidency (for two general reasons–the sense that you can’t leave the power of such weapon systems–with such immense ramifications following from their use–under any lesser office–Truman I think saying, yeah, not something I’m gonna let some colonel decide–and, only a few years later, because as a practical measure, once you had a nuclear armed rival, because the decision to retaliate might have to be made in minutes, so you couldn’t have a committee, exactly)… From that moment, for all those decades, it has hung heavily on that office; I’ve always wondered if it was significant among the reasons the US presidency so infamously ages people.
Trump, seriously, though, I just don’t think he gets it. Hasn’t the damned capacity for reflection. It’s just another reality TV show, for him, where he has to somehow prove he’s this brilliant negotiator, can ‘win’ another game of chicken, live up to what his ghost writer made the story. Equally terrifying: I think he can justify _any_ decision to himself, after the fact, however random, poorly conceived, poorly planned. And I think it’s pretty clear: he just doesn’t think ahead beyond the next news cycle; the notion of his having _any_ real plan for anything, let alone a good one, just isn’t on; he can _get_ himself elected, because that kind of keep yourself in the news thing can work in a campaign, but it’s pretty limited beyond that. Not to alarm anyone (assuming anyone isn’t already), but, yeah, really not liking where this is going.
Worse: people keep saying with this clown, too, oh, he’d never, wouldn’t really do this thing, wouldn’t do that, it’s all talk. I think by now we should all be working out: you don’t know when that’s true, here. Yes, sometimes it _is_ just talk, and he breaks promises with the best of them, but you just _don’t_ know _which_ times, with this idiot. Just because it’s monumentally stupid, this rules little out.
I did, in my mind at least, declare him a Clear And Present Danger some months ago. Still is, in spades.
Conclusion optional. But hoard spades.
