Hitler did not sink to that level…
Jeez, you turn your attention away for a few hours and look what happens.
In criticizing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday that even Adolf Hitler did not sink to that level of warfare, despite Hitler’s use of gas chambers to kill millions of Jews.
When given the chance to clarify his comment — uttered during Passover, the most celebrated Jewish holiday in the United States — Spicer then said Hitler took Jews “into the Holocaust center” but that Hitler “was not using the gas on his own people in the same way that Assad is doing.”
So I guess he doesn’t know that Zyklon B was a chemical weapon, and that it killed by suffocation. I guess he doesn’t know that the people killed by it died choking and convulsing just as the people in Idlib died. I guess he doesn’t know anything.
Later in the briefing, a reporter read Spicer’s comments back to him and gave him the opportunity to clarify. Spicer’s answer only added more confusion.
“I think when you come to sarin gas, there was no — he was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing,” Spicer said, mispronouncing Assad’s name. “I mean, there was clearly, I understand your point, thank you. Thank you, I appreciate that. There was not in the, he brought them into the Holocaust center, I understand that. What I am saying in the way that Assad used them, where he went into towns, dropped them down to innocent, into the middle of towns, it was brought — so the use of it. And I appreciate the clarification there. That was not the intent.”
Ah yes the Holocaust center, right next to the town hall and across from the movie theater.
Before the briefing was even over, White House press aides had realized the magnitude of his mistake — and were working on a response to clarify it. Shortly after he stepped away from the lectern, Spicer put out a statement trying to explain what he meant.
“In no way was I trying to lessen the horrendous nature of the Holocaust,” Spicer said in the statement. “I was trying to draw a distinction of the tactic of using airplanes to drop chemical weapons on population centers. Any attack on innocent people is reprehensible and inexcusable.”
Dude. The fact that it comes from a plane or a missile doesn’t make it worse than if it had come from an SS man or a kapo dropping it down a slot in the roof.
In January, the White House released a statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, that made no mention of Jews or the anti-Semitic views that fueled the Holocaust. At the time, White House spokeswoman Hope Hicks said the omission was intentional because the White House staff is an “incredibly inclusive group, and we took into account all of those who suffered.”
She did say that. I remember it.

I really don’t see how any of them can walk this back. Either Jewish people (resp. gays, Roma, the disabled, etc) *weren’t* “[Hitler’s] own people”, and so gassing them was a reprehensible (perhaps) war crime but not a perverse abrogation of a leader’s fundamental responsibilities to their constituents (which is the attempted moral foundation of the bombing), or they *were* his own people and the Holocaust simply never happened (which is arguably close to what Bannon, if not Spicer and the rest, privately believe). Either option is a gross misrepresentation of history and would be risible in any barroom, but is terrifying from the podium of the White House Press Room.
Seth – exactly what I was thinking. He sounds like he is saying the Jews weren’t “his own people” – but many of the Jews gassed were in fact German citizens.
Or perhaps he was suggesting they weren’t “innocent” – another term Spicer used. Which is also reprehensible. It would accept the Nazi assessment of Jewish guilt.
This administration has got to go…is it 2020 yet? Please?
Many comments I’ve seen claiming the sarin gas attack was a conspiracy, claim that Assad wouldn’t gas his own people…
It’s totally different! Assad brought the poison gas to the people. Hitler brought the people to the poison gas! I’m not sure why this matters one bit, but apparently it does.
Of course! Well, I feel the stupid one now…
So there was the thing with the gas, and he dropped it on, and the children, it was horrible, I’m telling you, horrible, but then, of course, what Hitler did, he didn’t, I mean, Uh, On his own people and all, so I didn’t mean to imply, but I appreciate the clarification, thank you, and then the whole wiretapping affair, and I was right about that, but you know, we got some amazing people in line for this, you’ll see, I talked to Bill O Reilly about this yesterday, he never should have settled in my opinion, great guy, says very nice things about me, very nice, so I think what we got here is something really special, but there was the thing about the gas, and that was inexcusable, and nobody understands that better than me, so you can stop shaking your head, sir, but we won, and it was the greatest victory ever, so that’s all good, thank you.
Nope, sorry, can’t do it. Maybe somebody can create an automatic Trump/Spicer Word Salad Generator. The only difference as far as I can tell is that Trump cannot stay on any subject for more than 30 seconds without talking about himself and the greatness of his victory.
Spicer is tone deaf, inept and an idiot (par for the administration?), but he’s not a Holocaust denier. I think The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg has it right: “Sean Spicer is an ignoramus; the vile propagators of Holocaust denial know exactly what they’re doing.” https://twitter.com/JeffreyGoldberg

Freud just slipped over in his grave.
My husband was reading this morning that one of their justifications of this awful moment is that it was “written by a Jew”. I have no words.
What can you expect with a golem in the Whitehouse? Somebody please take the slip of paper from his mouth or put Spicer back in his mouth.
Well…the Nazis didn’t use chemical weapons in combat during WWII. How noble of them, but the threat of chemical warfare hovered over the whole conflict. Those cylindrical containers you see carried by German soldiers throughout the war were gas mask holders.
Beevor’s recent history of the war documents that the Japanese DID use both biological and chemical weapons in China. Suffering several thousand deaths among their own military as the result of accidents.
And in Europe, the worst case involved the Germans hitting a U.S. cargo vessel in an Italian port, releasing a huge spill of mustard gas.
John the Drunkard, that final sentence does invite the question; why was a US cargo ship in Italy carrying huge amounts of mustard gas?
