I saw an Internet discussion yesterday on the World Hijab Day and despaired. So many women, who no doubt see themselves as proggressives, explaining that head or body coverings are absolutely fine if it’s the “woman’s choice to cover”, or that muslim women have “many different reasons to cover up”, they don’t just “do it for the men”. And then there was the lot who were saying they wouldn’t participate, because it would be cultural appropriation. One person in particular was repeatedly referencing “islamic feminism” and how it sees coverings as non-oppressive or even liberating. Not one person was challenging the base concept of sex based modesty, even the people who were disagreeing with the WHD.
