Would you prefer frying pan, or fire?
And now for something completely different – a military coup in Turkey. The BBC is live updating.
Summary
- A Turkish military statement read out on television says it has taken over power
- The prime minister says security forces have been called in to deal with the situation
- Military jets and helicopters are seen flying over the capital, Ankara
- Military vehicles are said to be blocking bridges in Istanbul and gunfire is heard
- Turkey soldiers launch ‘illegal action’
Then a frightening reminder:
New British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson ‘very concerned’

Not reassuring.
Military coups are not legitimate, but neither is theocracy.
Coups on behalf of human rights are rare, but they have happened.
I’m concerned about Boris Johnson being given a position of responsibility greater than tying his own shoelaces, so that’s not influencing me.
I noticed a comment that Prince Phillip would be even worse, not much consolation for the British I’m sure. The ‘Sir Humphrey’ in charge of the FO will see to it that Boris is suitably entertained while others do the work.
