Reporter arrested at Trump rally for filming while brown
CBS News reporter Sopan Deb was arrested Friday night while covering protests surrounding Donald Trump’s canceled rally in Chicago.
Deb, who has covered the Republican presidential front-runner‘s candidacy since last summer, was filming video of a man whose face was bloody and lying on the ground near police at the time of his arrest, according to a “CBS This Morning” report Saturday.
“Deb continued to roll as police kept watch,” the CBS report noted. “Without warning, Deb was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground.”
A police officer placed his boot on Deb’s neck to keep him in place on the ground, according to the account he provided his network.
Illinois State Police charged Deb with resisting arrest though the network reported that neither his video, nor that of a nearby film crew, showed any sign of resistance. The reporter can also be seen on video identifying himself as a credentialed member of the media.
Remember when Trump was just a blowhard real estate developer? Now we get a living breathing fascist, scaring the fuck out of everyone and working up the crowds.
Last month, a Secret Service agent choke-slammed Time magazine photographer Chris Morris after he left the pen to cover a Black Lives Matter protest.
On Friday, Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields filed a police report related to Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski allegedly assaulting her after the candidate’s Tuesday night press conference.
Oh well, it’s only the free press.
And the next step towards open fascism: Trump openly egging his supporters to crash Sanders’ rallies.

Hey, let’s not exaggerate…
Real estate developer? He mostly licenses his brand to those, now. And plays one on TV.
(The other thing, pretty much.)
More seriously: the US (like a lot of places) needs to have a more mature, lucid conversation on a lot of things. Even if Trump mercifully does lose his white house bid, those angry people he’s successfully incited are still going to be there, tinder for the _next_ such spark. And there _are_ serious problems, all incredibly poorly served by reactionary demagogues pointing fingers and blaming immigrants and people who believe the _wrong_ idiot iron age myth.
I’m not optimistic about that, exactly. But, y’know, there presumably _is_ a way forward that doesn’t end in the place increasingly becoming a basket case of economic and ethnic division, and sputtering, resentful violence.

The Breitbart reporter and one of the editors (or whatever) have apparently resigned because the “news” network won’t tolerate any criticism of their favorite fuhrer.
Okay, I have a question only tangentially related to the story. In the video from the CBS reporter, there’s a cop carrying around something that looks, frankly, like a human femur. Anyone able to identify it? It’s right around the one-minute mark.
Freemage, I don’t know what it is. The reporter attempts to get a close-up of it, possibly because it appears to have some blood on it and it’s such a weird thing for a cop to be carrying.
I’m currently in a spot makes viewing video impractical…
But, oddly, the image these last few comments have constructed for me–a cop holding a bloody femur–presumably violently and suddenly extricated from someone present, much to their chagrin–seems of a piece, overall.
(/Tabloid headline: Trump: ‘Bernie’s Femur!’)
… come to think of it, I think I just worked out why it seems so oddly à propos…
It’s the Backwater Gospel. There’s a few bits like that, right at the climax. And the general arc of growing paranoia culminating in eviscerations… It’s all a bit reminiscent.
Not sure yet who’s who, in this reenactment.
I’m watching this from far away, although, I must say, I’m more and more interested in the upcoming American election.
Recently I’ve gone so far as to read an article in our press titled “The most complicated electoral system in the world”, explaining the details of the American voting system. The experience was traumatic. I’m still shaking. And it is all *your fault*!
Anyway, I’m not particularly surprised that the police got nervous intervening during clashes in which some police officers were hurt. Yeah, I know – attacks against the journalists are always newsworthy, but still. When shit happens, people become nervous and the journalists – or, in general, those at the frontline – are particularly vulnerable. Do you think that the journalists became a special, selected target? If so, this would be a real worry indeed (justifying to some degree the accusations of fascism). But is it the case?
By the way, I read the linked Huffington Post articles. I noticed the accusations against Trump – e.g. one paper quotes with an apparent approval Emanuel’s statement about “hateful, divisive rhetoric that pits Americans against each other”. At the same time, at the end of the same paper there is the following Editor’s Note:
I would say that if this is not ‘hateful’ – if this is not a kind of political rhetoric fanning the flames – then I I’m at a loss to understand what qualifies as such in America. At the moment my impression is that there are more guilty parties than just one. Am I very wrong?
It’s not hateful or rhetoric when it’s true.
Trump has been repeatedly demonstrated to be a liar. His language around people of different races, cultures, religions, and even political persuasion is breathtakingly xenophobic and racist, especially for someone wanting to be taken seriously as a politician. His misogynistic statements to and about women are legion. He is on record as a birther and he has behaved as a bully for longer than he has had any public pretensions to politics.
This is a time to call a spade a fucking shovel. The current crop of republicans, exemplified by the current potential nominees, are far to the right of any acceptable political discourse in a modern pluralistic democracy. As a result they have also succeeded in dragging the ‘left’ over to a position that in my youth was regarded as right-wing!
Um, yeah, it can be. There are facts which can be expressed in tactful ways, and can be expressed in hateful, spiteful ways. The former can help to heal rifts, the latter to widen them. All with the same facts!
Or, as a wise person (I wish I could remember who) once said: “Being right is not an effective defense against the charge of being an asshole.”
Karellen, sure, in general terms. In the specifics of the article quoted, how is a bald recitation of facts hateful? Why should anyone be tactful in this case?
Well, this may be a case of chocolate and peanut butter–two great tastes of fascism, blending into a new and utterly terrifying whole.
You see, the Chicago PD have a long history of violence against PoCs, and they’ve resisted any effort at making them accountable. In particular, for years they used the state’s wiretapping law to justify prosecuting citizens who dared to record them while they were on the job. That finally got shut down by the state Supreme Court–and even then, prosecutions continued for several months while the cops feigned ignorance.
I also point you to the Laquan McDonald case, one of the many ugly incidents that has been behind the Black Lives Matter movement. A cop pretty much outright murdered a teen in front of five other officers, and the various institutions involved pretty much sat on the case in order to ensure it wouldn’t interfere with Emanuel’s re-election campaign.
So, the cops here are primed for just this sort of fascist thuggery.
I’ll note, too, that the official law enforcement folks have been involved in other instances at Trump rallies–in one, it was the Secret Service that pummeled a protestor; in another, the local sheriff’s officers decided to tackle the protester who got sucker-punched. I’m not suggesting active collusion, here–just the convergence of natural allies.
@Ariel
Michelle Fields was not assaulted by a police officer. She was assaulted by Trump’s campaign manager.
It was a mistake, you see. He didn’t realize she was with Breitbart. He thought she was with one of those OTHER news agencies.
